Sampson Mics
« on: January 10, 2006, 12:18:48 PM »
I'm looking to set up a rig on a budget...same old same old...

starting with a set of mics .. Noticed the Sampson C02s at the store and online cheap.  (~120$ for the pair).  Looking around here didn't see any real talk of using sampson mics? What are peoples thoughts on these particular mics and Sampson in general?

thanks

The cold hard truth?  You get what you pay for.

That being said, *something* is better than *nothing*.  If you're working on your first rig, these mics may be just fine.  It's all about YOUR perception of how they sound though.  I'd recommend finding a place that will let you return them if you're not happy (mics are often non-returnable at major retailers) and take them out for a test drive and see what YOU think.

Look in the yard sale and keep an eye out for the C1000S mics.  They can be had for about 200 used and they're a great set for starting out.

I have a set of C02's, and I think that they are great great great mics for the price.  I used them alot when I sent in my Nak's for modding, and some of the shows I taped with them turned out great!   I also use them when I am taping in bad weather too, like small outdoor festivals that I don't want to use my naks.

Good starter mics.  I've got a few shows that you might like to hear, taped with these mics.  PM me if you want me to send 'em to you.

I also have a set of these. And just for the record they are the EXACT same mic's as the superlux's that alot of folks were fluffing till the C4's came out.  If ran in a decent room at decent levels can produce a decent tape.

Honestly I cant say I enojoy the sound of the C1000's anymore than these. There both Starter mic's.
The only + I could see in going with the C1000's in not having to provide Phantom power. Hense saving ya a few bucks

here is a sample of a Anthony Gomes Tape I made with the samsons last year. (remember it is a Mp3 sample)
this was CO2>D-mod UA5>Jb3@48

Save some money there and put it towards a UA5 > JB3..hopefully!

Thanks for all the feedback.

One thing I will warn ya Logan.  If ya plan on doing any outdoor taping I would Highly suggest making some dead rat's or buying a thicker pair of Windscreens as I lost a tape before I learned they were not thick enough to use outdoors.  I simply made a pair of dead rats for mine and they have worked out nice.

you can find a crappy pic of the rats I made for mine here.
