Styrofoam Wig Holder for a J-Disc?
« on: August 11, 2004, 12:39:01 PM »
I'm wondering if I would be able to make a jecklin disc with a styrofoam 'head.' Ya know...those things that yer (elderly) wives put their hats or wigs on? I'd need to travel with it so, shaving it down to something smaller than 7 inches in diameter would be optimal.

Anyone have any thoughts how to convert it to a J-disc type device? My primary Q is in spacing the mics. (E.g. how thick does a Jdisc have to be?) Also, what would I cover it with? A stocking cap? And, attaching the mics to the dummy head....Things like that.

In instances where I'm not stealthing (myself onstage, taped by agent of wife) I could possibly use this dummy head on a table in the empty theater with dpa 4060's. (Which, hopefully I receive today....almost peeing my pants w/ anticipation). I suppose I'd need to have one of those dummy head bases that these styrofoam wig holders go onto to keep it from tipping....

Anyway....ignore me...I'm thinking out loud here...

I'm going to have to make that headband thing too, M. It's a work of pure (evil) genius. My bro is into RC plane building/crashing...I mean...FLYING...and I think I'll ask him if his shrink wrap will work. I seem to remember him using hair dryers on it when he was assembling wings. FWiW.

So, what you are saying is, in HTRF the 'top' of the 4060's willl point forward? In Bin they point Up?

Any comments as to the thickness of the head? And making a quasi jdisc device?

You are really playing with Bianurals - not jenklin here...

I used to have an entire foam rubber manican body - Not just a head...the whole body...

I had a pair of omni electret capsules that I installed in the ears...

I used to dress this thing up and take it to record my brothers band in PennState Bars circa 1990-92 - and occasionally set it up at various venues that I might be doing live sound in...

What a hoot!!! Made OK tapes...more of an experiment...

But it seems to me that Mokes jdisc is 2-4 inches wide using styrofoam. How does THIS situation differ?

As far as the headband goes. that was just a general comment, not necessarily related to this.

It's not a disc...I think the idea of the J-disc is a rather large, acoustically opaque plane/seperator...

http://www.josephson.com/tn5.html

2 inches is ok - 4 seems a bit wide...maybe that accounts for the fur.

A foam head does not offer the same level of opacity...due to it's size and shape...

Similar concepts - yes...but I dont think the head would qualify as a J-disc...

Ok. Thanks. I'll re-search on the mini j-disc and let you know how this all works out. Need to have things fig'd out before Hamburg Traviata and Dresden Butterfly in Sept. Must be compact in design so I guess it's back to the drawing board....

One quick Q: Anyone care to point me in the direction of editing/flac'ing? I really need to start educating myself on post production and flac usage. Haven't a fargn' clue what 'seeding' is....

Feel free to snort, point and laugh at the noob.
