Topic: MBHO caps???

Now I have the ka200n and looking into getting the omis or hypers.  I think I know what they are for, what do they sound like? Any info would be great,

Hi Ed and All,

I have found that the MBHO KA-500's are among the best sounding hyper-cardioids I've ever used.  I put them on par with Schoeps mk-41's which I totally dig for less than optimal rooms and when recording from a considerable distance indoors.  

Surprisingly, the KA-500's tend to have at least as much bottom-end as the cardioid KA-200's, and possibly even more.  If you are interested, we have a sample of KA-500's for the encore of a Widespread set I and II.  This makes for a good comparison and gives perspective to how they sound.  Drop an email off-list if interested.  NO shortage of bottom-end like I've heard MBHO's catching a rap for.

I've only used the omnis a couple times, but they are open, spacious, and detailed.

I used the KA200s with an MP-3 for a few years and all of my outdoor/FOBs are very *bass heavy*, too much in fact. I've since gotten some KA100s (omnis)  to remedy that but have been on the fence recently about purchasing some KA500s for those few arena shows I might hit once a year. I've also gotten some inconsistant info regarding what to use outdoors. I'm pretty straight with how to use omnis, 6' split, flat surface/no structures behind and up closer than FOB. But are wide-cards and hyper-cards ever used (successfully) outdoors? This is where I've gotten some inconsistant info. I know I *don't* want to use the cards outdoors anymore

I used the KA-300's sub-cardioids for a The Cover (I mean Other) Ones show in 2000.  We were at Front of House at Hitler's (I mean Fiddler's) Green here in Denver.  They sound very nice.  

This was also the show that I made my first AD-1000/AD2K (2402) comparison.

Now Rob, I'm a bit surprised at the KA-200's being excessively bassy.  Are you using the HPF (bass roll-off) on the MP-2?  I would expect this to help immensely.

If you don't like the way the cards sound, try the hypers. I love the mk41, find it to be one of the most versitle caps you can use. They are great for outside if you are far from the source. They are great indoors for areans, or even up closer in crappy sounding rooms. They give you a real tight image and if you don't like your bass to be heavy, the hyper might be a good choice for you since the bass in those tends to be tigher and smoother, though not as boomey.

Omni's would be fun to play with, however, the hypers would get more use.  Thanks for the info!

i'm wondering about the ka1000's....
anyone ever run these before?
anyone have a pair they'd be willing to lend for HSMF to tape with?
I'm considering renting them from nutter but it'll be kinda pricey just for a weekend of taping   ($150???)
also will run them for ph chula vista

wondering how these will compare with the ka200n's
