NOS / DIN Bar for Milab
« on: February 23, 2010, 05:05:40 PM »
Has anyone taken on trying to build an NOS bar for the Milab VM44 Link's?  Kwon / NOLAFishwater?  I'm not much of a DIY'er....

This probably should be over in the microphone forum....

Never used the VM-44 but I love the DC-196.  Not as small as the VM-44 Links, but pretty damn small especially for a LDC.  By the time you buy a couple of omni caps, the 196s are actually less expensive than the 44s, and the 44s don't have a figure-8 cap.

Been using the figure-8 more than I expected.  MS of course, but also spaced figure-8s ala Tony Faulkner.  I've been recording a 16 member jazz vocal group with spaced figure-8s: half the signers one one side, half on the other.  Then I place the rhythm in the null points off to the sides.  Everyone can see and hear each other, and I get good isolation.  The DC-196 is great on vocals and choirs; no harshness or "spittyness" that one sometimes gets with condensers.

Sorry to get OT, but I thought maybe this would help you decide.

Others don't like them [cough--dactylus--cough], but I find the milab mic mounts pretty versatile.  So in terms of a NOS mount, just get a mic mount with the right spacing and use the mounts that come with the mics.

I've got a mic mount bar that Darktrain made that has multiple mounting holes, and the outside pair gives a pretty good NOS spacing -- 29-30 cm.  [If you pick up the vm44's, I might even be convinced to sell this mounting bar, since I'm not using it too much.]

I also picked up this mount bar for my Gefells:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/534727-REG/K_M_23550_500_55_23550_Adjustable_Microphone_Bar.html#features

I haven't pulled off my milab mounts to test it exactly, but at 90 degrees and the milab mounts, it looks like it gives a spread of about 27-28 cm.  So not exactly NOS, but close.

There also is a thread somewhere now (microphone section?) about a 4mic mount from sabrasom that certainly could be used with the milab mounts to get true NOS.

EDIT:  On re-reading the thread, I see you're also asking about DIN.  The K&M bar I've got listed above would definitely do DIN, and as I said could come close to NOS.  Same with that sabrasom bar, so you could pretty easily get a standard, stock bar that would accommodate (or nearly accommodate) both patterns.

I'd love to see a Kwon bar ORTF and DINa - NOS/DIN for the VM-44-links

I made this DIY ORTF DINa bar
http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,116550.msg1558062.html#msg1558062

it's easy!

easier is same pipe with a 3/8" threaded rod and use the mic clips unaltered- with the 5/8" to 3/8" adapters that come with the mic clips.

or you could even use a delrin riser from darktrain- I suppose or other threaded 5/8" adapter
I like the lo profile of the VM-44's and am waiting to afford some omni caps
though I also really want a pair of DC196's especially for blumlein (figure 8)
If you don't need to be discreet get the 196's as they are more versatile.
