Firewall configuration help needed (mac)
« on: July 16, 2004, 12:34:55 AM »
I just noticed that my computer is behind a firewall. Anyone know how to change the port settings (the 6881-6889 thing), so I can get better d/l speeds? I'm running OSX 10.2.8.

Thanks,
Kevin

What kind of firewall?  I'm assuming a hardware firewall?  Router?

I don't know. It has to do with Bit Torrent d/l's, though.

I was looking at the bt.etree tracker to see how I was doing and it said that my connection is firewalled. They had a link with a configuration tutorial, but it was mostly PC info. It said I need to open up ports 6881-6889. How do I do that?

depends on the bit torrent your using, but try clicking on bit torrent in upper left corner then click preferences, there you should be able to change ip address and ports
hope this helps

My BT client does'nt have a 'preferences' section. It has a configuration section, but I can't change the port settings. It says my port minimum is 6881, and my max is 6999.

BrickHouse provides an easy-to-use graphical interface to activate and configure the firewall which is built into OS X. Unfortunately, the default settings don't necessarily meet the needs of every user. This article will show you how to tweak your firewall settings to meet your needs.

No, the problem is that you're behind a hardware firewall, more than likely your router.  OS X does not ship with the firewall active...

How do I fix it?

What kind of modem do you have? That will help to know

Have you ever been to the control panel of that modem by entering the default gateway  in your browser?
that is where you can change the port settings.

Apple Mac OS X: any of the following:
* Pull down the Apple menu, select System Properties, click Network. In the pull-down Show: select the network interface in use. Click tab TCP/IP and look for the line Router.
* Open a Terminal window, type the command ipconfig getoption en0 router (where en0 is the name of the interface in use)
