Which Capsules for the Oktava Mc-012...
« on: November 28, 2004, 02:21:43 PM »
I have a set of Oktavas with the 2gig Dorsey mod... I mostly record in small clubs using the cardoid caps that came with...  (mostly X-Y)  If I had to choose which extra set of capsules (Hyper or Omni) to buy first...  What would I choose?...   More important... why  (see this is also a setup question)
Cad E300S set.. AT822  AKG C 414 B-XLS/ST
Dorsey-Mod MK-012 w/ O, C, H and RED L/D Caps
Superlux S502 ORTF   LSD2
Silverpath  Cables>

hyper, cuts down on chatter and has a great pickup pattern IMO

you will be happier w/ the hypers for now, maybe in the summer for more open venues the omnis would work, but i dont think omnis would play well in small, chatty clubs

When I had the MC-012's I liked all the capsules. I thought the hyper-cardioid caps were the most usefull.
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

hypers are def. the money cap for the oktavas. make those mics sound 100 times better than the cards..though if i were looking to have more than one set of caps i'd sell those things off in a second and get the superluxes or something similar. i personally hated the oktavas with cards. sold them after about 3 weeks.

I will agree on the hypers being way better than the cards.. have run several comparison setups with the identical rig card versus hyper and even for stack taping the hyper almost always is crisper..

my friends theory is that Oktava has made so many more card caps .. that the hyper caps are done in limited quantities and therefore in a bit higher quality.

dont know about the production details, but I found the hypers to be best for our uses.  If I had to use just one, it would be the hypers..  but they all sound _good_

cards xy onstage, or in sweet spot of small club
hypers din in small/medium clubs, even sheds
omni's outside 4-5ft spread
