This is a cross post, but I really need to decide on a good pair of mics to go with a pmod ua-5. Someone suggested the studio projects c-4s , the akg 391, and need a few more suggestions. I will mainly be taping alt-country, bluegrass, and the occasional punk/metal show(not often)
If you suggest an item, please tell me the exact mic model and manufacturer...I also have a JB3...
I am slowly learning, this hobby, and everyones help has been like manna from heaven . I plan to tape a lot of shows in cologne and wiesbaden(which are medium size clubs with live music) Need some more info so I can decide where to put my christmas money. Thanks yall.

Both nice mics, I have used both of them in the past.  If you are gonna do alot of varied taping may i suggest a pair of audix m1290's they are small enough to stealth but full body mics in case you need to stealth.

The akg blueline series (se300b body ck9x capsules) is a great beginner system. I've had the best sucess with the ck93 hyper cap. However I have also used the ck92 omni and the ck91 card. Go with the hypers, and I think you'll be very happy. I you want to hear the hypers, I just torrented Phish 7/31/03 over on bt.etree.org, here's the link: http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=10076

My reasoning is that if you need all the caps then the c4's are a much better bargain; it will cost ~450 I think for brand new c4's with all three (six) caps including shockmounts and windscreens. The windscreens blow but I replaced my at8410 shock mounts with the sp ones; they're smaller and the swivel bolt stays tight.

If you think then you will only need one set of caps then the 391's should be considered. As many people mentioned they are proven in the field.

Maybe look into Apex 420's. They're LD's with card and omni. Inexpensive, and from the one sample I've heard, they sound damn good. Honestly I know very little about these mics and I'm trying to learn more....but, since you're interested in beginer mics, thought they were worth mentioning. Also, listen to some Nakamichi samples at the archive. cm100's and cm300's are also an option for you and very cheap. But, you have to make sure you like the Nak sound before venturing down that road.

I like the way the ADK SC-Ts sound when taping bluegrass.  They come with both card & omni caps.  Not sure the P-Mod would be best for them though (but that could just be personal pref.)

I'm really happy with my AT 3035 > P-Mod UA-5 setup.  The 3035's are a reasonably priced
LD, card mic.  I used to run Oktava MC-012, cards into the UA-5 and was never really happy
with the sound.

Look into the Audio Technica 4033, They are LD but they were used to record many albums in the early 90's including Floyd Dark Side of the Moon. Very nice cardiod mic, better than the ADK A51s (another option.) If stealth is a requirement I would get the AKG 390's with the actives.
