Core Sound or SoundPro?
« on: April 30, 2005, 01:47:05 AM »
hi folks, i wanted to acquire a new set of mics + battery box (up to $250) and was wondering whats the best choice for very loud gigs with noisy crowds:

1. Core Sound Stealthy Cardioid + Core Sound Battery Box
2. SoundPro SP-CMC2 + SoundPro SP-SPSB-6

i appreciate any help/suggestions.

FWIW, I've heard more better recordings out of the inexpensive AT-based SP mics than the inexpensive CS mics.  IMO, it's a no brainer.  I'm no help deciding between the -2 or -6, but hopefully someone will chime in.  I believe this has been discussed before, so try a search for SP-CMC-2 and I bet you'll get a few hits.

Customer service, especially cant be touched. Everytime I call that angel of a person Len, I feel like im inserting a catheter to ask for customer service. Dont forget also the tale of someone calling em up and Len asking them to call back later that they were "at lunch". I didnt know entire businesses shut down for lunchtime.

I'm also gonna jump on the SP bandwagon. Nothing but good things to say about them. Customer service was great. IMO the SP mics definately sound better than the CS counterparts.

I am a Core Sounds fluffer, but I also agree that the SP-CMC-2 is the way to go.  I run them when I do stealth recording (not very often) and my results have been very good.

Yep.  SP has been great.  I must have sent them ten Emails over the last year or two asking questions.  And "private" stuff too, like what capsules are in this mic.  I've always got prompt and honest answers.  In constrast such questions to Core yield vague or evasive replies.  I don't need that kind of nonsense.  We're the ones paying after all!

I don't have experience of the CS cardioids, but I do have the CMC-2s and they are great.  I taped the Scorpions and Judas Priest (March 30, 2005, Cardiff International Arena) which is kind of the thing you are looking at I think, and I am very pleased with the results.

Have a listen to some raw mp3 samples if you want:

I've ranted in these forums several times before about Core Sound. Search for the "critique your rig" thread if you care. Summary: Core Sound customer support is a joke, I will never deal with them again.

best regards,
stephen
