What would be a reasonable upgrade...keeping in mind that I'd like to keep it as portable as possible and don't need to make a big jump right away. Would AT853's be a good next step?
I've never tried the AT822, but I would expect AT853 to have similar quality. Some advantages of AT853 are: 1) you can stealth them, 2) you can change caps. I love my hyper caps for bad rooms, 3) you can vary the angle/spacing. If I had the chance to trade to AT853, I might do it. But then, I'd probably keep the 822 too because I just love having more gear. Also keeping the 822 is good in case you lend it to someone else who doesn't know how to or doesn't bother positioning mics.
