i have owned and used an enormous number of SD condensers including DPA, schoeps, gefells, neumanns, akg's, etc.  my favorite cards are:
1.  DPA 4011s
2.  AKG C481s
3.  Sennheiser MKH40s

all are quite neutral and useable on virtually any source.  for some applications where i want a bit brighter mic, i like the AT4051s.  the gefell m300s and especially the 295s with the nickel diaphragms are also quite good.  neumann km84s are also excellent if you can find a good pair.  km184s/140s are okay, but generally too bright for my taste, and tend to work better in near-field than in diffuse field applications.

This Lebowski, he called himself the Dude. Now, Dude, that's a name no one would self-apply where I come from. But then, there was a lot about the Dude that didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. And a lot about where he lived, like- wise. But then again, maybe that's why I found the place s'durned innarestin'.

Freelunch, looks like now you made that decision, you bot that N-box?  Maybe you'll be able to get the mk4 caps for about 900 used.  That still puts you in the same relative price range as trey's km140 and actives deal.  You heard Skilander's N-box comparison tapes....it thins the sound a bit and IMHO brings out the unpleasent aspects of the Schoeps collette series....namely the overemphasis on the high end, then again the comparisons was with lemosax vs. N-box with mk41 caps, so it may be entirely different with the mk4s.  Enough already, on with the poll...

1) DPA4011
2) Schoeps CMC6X (this and the Neumanns are nearly tied for me, Schoeps just barely)
3) Neumann KM140/143

4) MG M2XX
5) AKG C48X
