AT shock mounts?
« on: July 06, 2005, 10:17:32 AM »
Alright, here's the deal. I've been running the SP-CMC-2As, which are basically some AT831 knockoffs made by soundpros. Been QUITE happy with them and the results that I've had with them. But, I taped a show the other night and my stand was taped down solid, but it got a lot of kicking and gave some weird noises on the tape.

Are there shockmounts out there that work good for the AT831s? These are so close to the AT831s that I think I could easily get away with it... just curious if there is a certain type of shock mount I should be looking into.

Thanks!
Jason

well when you tape DMB you gotta carry a stick or some other apparatus and threaten to clock anyone who kicks your stand.  Thats one concert where I have absolutly no problem being a dick to a person who kicks my stand.  or trys to use it for a handhold.

For shocks Sound professionals sells a mount for your mics that fits into a full size AT shockmount, however you can easily do this yourself.   I did a similar project for my active cable mics.  I got a studio projects shockmount (I think you can buy them cheaply from the company) and a wooden dowel.  I placed the wooden dowel through the shockmount like you would a full size mic.  Then I had screwed/glued some thread adapters and stuck the standard mic clips on them.  For you since you probably have tiny little clips you could get a piece of flex metal tubing or some other adjustable gooseneck material, place it inside a pvc tube the same size as a full size mic and stick that in a shockmount then clip your mics with the lapel clips on the ends of the gooseneck.  Just like the Sound professionals model.

Some cheap shockmounts to do this with are, studio projects (I think $15), Superlux - very low pro ($6) and of course you could always go with the big AT mounts but thats overkill for what your doing.

Thanks.

Yeah, for the these "cheaper" mics, going all out for shock mounts seems a bit ridiculous, so I wasn't sure if there was a cheaper route I could pursue.

Thanks for the ideas. :)

well they wouldn't really fit but its not so ridiculous because the upgrade bite will hit you soon enough and you may find yourself with full size mics.  And hey those "cheaper mics" are practically fail safe, any tape with the cmc-2's sounds really good regardless and usually doesn't overload with just the battery box.  Oh, Look in the rig pics section, a bunch of people have homebrew bars and such.
