AKG ck62's
« on: July 08, 2005, 08:57:25 AM »
I'd really like to take a pair of these bad boys out on the road at the end of the month, if anyone has a pair that they would be willing to let me borrow.  We're doing 7 Panic shows in 8 days, all up and down the East Coast, and 2 of the shows are reserved, tape-from-your-fob-seat shows (Charlotte and Bristow). I've got great seats for running spread omni's at both. Will be running AKG 480b+ck6x > Oade m248 > Oade mod-SBM-1 > 7-pin - optical > JB3 (w/ a DAT backup). Thanks to another board member, I've now got a great LITTLE box for storing the mic bodies and all 3 sets of caps, and I can assure you these would be babied the whole time they are in my care. Plenty of references around here if needed. I'd need these July 27th thru August 8th, and would be more than happy to return them with FLAC discs of the shows.

Let me know.

You can borrow mine, but I'd highly recommend against doing it. I went through an infatuation phase with running them, but they were just too boomy. I ran hypers 5 out of  6 shows out west, even when we were reasonably close, and was very happy with the results.

Hey Wade,
I've got some 62s and we will be at Portsmouth both nights.   I was planning on probably running them one of the 2 nights depending on the situation.  You can certainly borrow them one of the 2 nights if you'd like.

Shoot me a PM if  you want.

Re: suggestion to use a jeklin disc ... actually, I was planning on running more like a 12' foot spread using two stands and with one mic on each, pointed at the stacks.

From 17th row center in Charlotte, I'm thinking these could be pretty nasty.

Under the shed in Charlotte may not be the best application for omnis.  You'll pick up any and all reverbaeration under that metal roof.  They like a wide open playing field with nothing to bounce sound off of.

Good point.  Which of these venues (below) would be better suited to the purpose? I've not been to anyof these.

Nissan Pavilion * Bristow, VA

Penn's Landing * Philadelphia, PA

Pier Six * Baltimore, MD

Chevrolet Amp * Pittsburgh, PA

Harbor Center * Portsmouth, VA

Bristow is the same as Charlotte - just a different city.

There's been rumors that Panic is playing the Fielake Fest next month, and assuming it will be held in a big open field, should be a great application.

I've run them at Red Rocks as well and you even get reflections from the sides of the rocks.  Mixon's tapes from Larkspur sound great and from what I've heard from Joe's Bonnaroo, they sound awesome as well.  They put you at the source of the recording and sound very open and spacious.

I have been to the other venues you listed.

You can run mine too if the other offers don't work out. (I may be at Bristow, but could run cards or hypers.)  Bought new a couple years ago and used maybe 10 times or less. I love the ck62s, although I agree that with panic + ck62s you will need an appropriate system to be able to enjoy the sound captured.

you'll laugh, but if you want to run omni's at any of the above sheds, split them on the lawn.  I can't recall what I've heard, but I remember it being a nice tape.

boswell is right... split omnis from the lawn can sound very nice...

Run the split omni's regardless, it's not like there won't be a few good rigs out there anyway. Worse comes to worse the BT will be up in less than a week. If you have the playback system split omni's in the right venue will scare ya. 62>248 is a killer combo, John & Mixon ran it for the first Boner-roo, STELLAR tapes.

Nick & I are headed down to Bristow, we are meeting Eric Weiner, drop me a line & ket me know where you all are staying.
I know you like, tape for people's approval and stuff, and wave your tapes around like they're your dick...  but even you can't actually think section tapes from philips sound good.
