Topic: how much is too much vert placement for x/y?

I've got spc4's and a short t bar.  Most configs are fine, but to get x/y I have to run one mic on each side of the t-bar.  This creates roughly 8-9 inches of vertical spacing between the caps.  Is this too much for x/y?  I guess what I'm asking is, will this be a noticeable difference from running x/y with the caps more closely spaced on the same side of the bar, via some sort of riser.

I'm no XY expert, but it's my understanding that true XY is when the capsules are right on top of one another with the bodies seperated between 90 and 120 degrees. Having 8-9 inches of space between the caps may not give you the effect you're truely looking for... are you hoping to eliminate some bass from the recording?

in the near future so that I can get them more properly aligned, but I'll be taping a local guy this weekend at a little hole in the wall bar, and I'm thinking x/y will definitely be the best bet since the room will be boomy.  I searched around and I did see that some people ran x/y this way, but I didn't see much talk about how much space would be "acceptable" for lack of a better word.  I checked out two guitar stores and a few camera shops today and no one had anything like the lo-2b in stock.

Just as food for thought, you may think about trying this bar: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/KM235/1/ as it swivels into many different positions and configurations. You could mount one mic on the top of the bar and one on the bottom, then swivel it so the caps are on top of each other and the mics are angled how you want. Several people on this board use it. hmm...maybe I can't tell from the pic, but it looks like the bar only swivels on the horizontal plane...so I'd still have the same spacing between my mics after they were in the mounts as my current bar.  Or am I missing something?

hmmm.... you may have to use your shockmounts and put one on the topside of the bar and one on the bottom side of the bar, then tilt the mics sideways like this: http://homepage.mac.com/gottajiboo40/.Pictures/DSC01088.JPG I'm still not sure you'd get enough clearance though... you may need a Shure vert bar (like in the picture) for it to work properly.

ahh..so I could just flip the whole one side, and probably get the spacing I need.

I got the akg bar shown w/ my post and use the the 5/8">3/8" adapter and remove one of the metal female screw in's in my shock mount. Then I use one shock w/ standard 5/8" stud and other w/ 3/8" adapter.This allows me enough clearance for XY, DIN, etc.

last question (I swear).  How easily do those arms swivel?  It looks like it would need to be adjusted and tightened with a wrench to get it secure?
