A look at the guts of a AKG ck5
« on: December 16, 2008, 05:37:45 AM »
The ck5 capsule is a highly stable capsule designed for the 451/452 bodies but can be used with 460/480 bodies with the a60 adapter.  It is used for hand held and boom applications due to it's built in elastic suspension and windscreen.  The capsule inside is a ck1 cardiod capsule with out the markings.  The pair that I recently got happened to have a black and silver capsule and I have yet to test to see how "matched" they are.  Clearly the are from different production runs (#8119 & #4684).  The inner capsule fitting is suspened and connected to the preamp fitting by a single wire and appears to have a ground cable as well.  It got me thinking about how to modify this for a remote capsule.  The question would be how the capsule would be powered over a run of 8+ feet.

small clarification.  All 450x series capsules can work with the 460 preamp with the a60 reducer rings but NOT on the 480 bodies.

Thanks for posting the pics though, very nice capsules.

I beg to differ.  They actually match up quite well ;D.

From what I have read, the only 450 caps that don't work with the adapter is the ck9 due to the fact that it overlaps the 450 body.  I have also read that the mk46 > ck_x series only works with the 460 bodies.

I stand corrected.

All information I have ever seen stated to the contrary.

This was the impression I was under too.
I've never heard of anyone doing it until now.
Just the 460's.

Sounds nice too.

Blew me away too...gotta borrow some 480 bodies and play.

Re: the ck5 capsules, thanks for posting the pics Ted.  More gear pr0n.  From looking at the frequency chart, I wonder if these are more like ck1s than ck1 with that extended low frequency roll-off?

I remember reading somewhere that the ck4 fig. 8 capsule also only works with the 450 series bodies (and the c60/c61 tubes).

The funny thing is that I didn't give it a second thought when i slapped on the a60 & ck1 to the 480's.  After seeing stir's post I remembered reading that the early ck line didn't work with the 480's.  If I had remembered before this show, we wouldn't be having this conversation.  I wonder where, when and how that "fact" was started.

Awesome!  After some more testing let us know your thoughts in comparison to your other CK1 caps.

I'm guessing that just because 480's and CK1s will screw together with adapters and put out a signal doesn't mean that they are intended to work that way, or generate intended frequency response... case in point Nak 100 and Nak 300 parts mixed/matched sound less than optimal (been there, done that).

If you put them together and like what you get, that's fine.  But I suspect the AKG engineering department didn't see them as accurate.  If I mix and match parts from 2 bathrooms scales and one reads 10 pounds light, and one reads 10 pounds heavy, neither is "accurate" but most people will LIKE the one which reads 10 points light.  If you want more sizzle, and this combo gives you more sizzle, you will like it, there is nothing inherently wrong with that.  You won't find Chevy engineers recommending you drop a 350 V8 into an S10 pickup but people have done it, and they like the results.
