what are some other stereo micorphones out there besides the AKG 426B, C 422, & C24 and the Soundfield? been thinking of maybe trying out one of the AKG stereo mics if i can find one for sale sometime. any other suggestions on diff. stereo mics that are out there and would work well for taping in the field?

anybody try that studio projects lsd2 yet? Looks pretty interesting...wonder how it sounds for concert taping?

i'd love to run a ribbon mics....but would be waaaaay to nervous to every attempt to run it in the fiield way to fragile for me!

ribbon mics are generally too sensitive for our applications, but that studio projects is supposed to have gotten great reviews

I recently bought an ancient Sony ECM-99 off of Ebay for cheap, and I am pretty impressed with the results considering how old and cheap it is! I used it in a small bar for a local band and the sound is pretty good, even has a decent low-end. I definitely think it sounds better than the current crop of Sony stereo mics (the 907/908 etc.) and they are plentiful and cheap on Ebay... Plus having a mic that is powered by a C-cell battery is good for laughs.

I think it represents a reasonable step up in quality and price from the AT 822/825.

In addition to the AKG models you listed they also made the following stereo mics.

C33
C34

Also I own a Sony ECM 969 stereo mic, never found any information on it though. I've never tried it because it didn't come with the 5 pin to 2 3 pin xlr cable and I never got around to making one.

too sensitive?

Ribbon mics are typically very low sensitivity designs. Maybe you meant they are too fragile for our applications?

I too have read numerous great reviews on the Studio Projects LSD-2, and have been tempted to grab one. But alas, don't have the cash right now. It apparently has the same elements in it as their highly regarded C3 mics, which sounds intriguing.

Wonder if one could get a demo unit from some vendor? Anybody know of such a possibility? Hmm...

I have an old school Realistic stereo mic. It has a Wide/Norm/Off switch on it, with 2, 1/4" mono plugs coming off it. It actually does'nt sound half bad either.

just my $.02:

Royer SF-12 - Too fragile, you'll not only need to remember your batteries for your gear but also Xanax just to make it through a show with drunks running in to your fragile $2k+ mic.

SP LSD-2 - Very close to the ADK in sound, probably uses the same chinese made capsule as the ADK 51s and the MXL mics so if you like the ADK sound and want a stereo mic this would be a good choice.

USM69 or SM69 - Great mic, great freq. response geared toward far field recording, downside is like most LD condensers rear rejection is not as smooth or complete as SD mics.

AKG C426 - Same as above except mostly flat freq response, AKG vs. Neumann sound

Soundfield - Good if close, not so good if stuck in the TS.

Rode stereo mic - terrible for taping, has HF roll off comeing on above 3 khz, sounds really dull unless you are micing the horns on a stack, prolly great as a drum overhead but thats not what we do.

Sony mics - hit or miss, I've heard some great recordings from these but also some really shitty ones, I'd reccommend a ECM-999PR if you can find one it's the best sony one point for taping.

AKG C33/C34 - of course I'm biased

but I think this is gonna be a great mic, SD condenser stereo mic, mine is away in cali being modded with a custom frequency response desigined with only PA taping in mind. the diaphgrams are being lightened to bring true clarity to the diffuse signal reaching the mics they are literally going to be thinner than the royers ribbons (stock AKG 3 microns, Royer 1.8 microns, new diaphgrams 1 micron; so the transient response will be great).

The Shure is a ENG mic and the frequency response is not what you want for taping.

like I said it's jut my $.02 YMMV

Agree. It sounds dull unless it is a very, very nearfield recording.

I have used it as a drum overhead many times- it is good for that!

FWIW....the Rode NT4 is a decent mic. It can get a little boomy.....but it can be avoided.

Yes Doug has been reviewing indeed! Latest update from him came out this morning...he's just about gushing over the LSD2. There are sound samples and all. This might be all I need to push me over the edge and go for this thing. Hey, maybe we can all go in and get a group discount on LSD2's?

Here's a snippet:

"I must say I love these mics. I can see no reason for anyone spending less than 1500.00 on a pair of mics not taking the time to audition these. I feel the C4 is the choice for entry level mics. The LSD2 is a great choice for those who love large diaphragm mics but cannot afford a U89 or TLM170 and have issue with the HF of the plethora of re branded Chinese mics rich in HF problems. I was surprised to find the LSD2 to be a world class performer for a bargain basement price, very highly recommended !

Most are 90 second clips, except the Perpetual Groove, which is a 13 minute jam. All but the Dan Hicks were recorded with the NT-4.
What do y'all think? They sound all right to me, but I am saving up for something better.

ive never been a fan of the r0de mics. they always sound really brittle and dry to me.
