Title: 099b options?
Post by: Taper Chris on October 02, 2016, 12:14:28 PM
Does anyone know of a pole that will go shorter than a 99b but still extend 7 feet(ish)? Thanks.

There's one drawback with these arms though: The spigot at the bottom end of the extension is made out of Aluminium only.

Dunno if I'm grasping your question correctly, but both the Manfrotto 122B (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5359-REG/Manfrotto_122B_122B_Adjustable_Pole_for.html) or Impact LS-3S (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/253077-REG/Impact_LS_3S_Two_Section_Back_Light.html) will collapse to 21 inches or extend to about 33 inches.  The spigot ends of either one will fit securely into the bottom of the 099B, effectively giving you well over 7 feet if you need it.

Or is it that you're looking for a single extension pole that collapses to less than 3 feet but can extend to around 7 feet?

I hope you find it, but I suspect you'll have a tough time finding something off the shelf.

Way back, I had a custom extension built by APIC, length of 22" - 110", 5 sections.  Thirteen (!) years ago, I had a phone number for them:  http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=2455.msg17703#msg17703

No idea if they're still in business, but might be worth investigating.

I just went w a 099b. I'll find something w a brass or removable spigot that'll fit into my bag later.

I'm in the market for a 99b. Anyone know if there is a cheaper place than one of the usuals (B&H, etc) to pick one up?

I have Lowel poles....both the full and half...have considered buying a Lowel UN-55 stand because the diameter of the third sections match each other and franken moding the half pole and the other three sections of the stand together...should be better than 7ft

They don't come up on eBay often, but you might put out an ISO on the YS here.  That's where I got mine.

I will say that after using it, I think the full asking price is reasonable for the quality you get.

Thanks! I really dig both of those! Since I sold my Lowel Half & Full Poles and bought a new 099B, I now need to pick up a BLACK Matthews Baby Stand Extension, so that I have a small extension to go at the top of my 10' Calumet MF6045 Stands :)

Don't forget that the Manfrotto 124 (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/302172-REG/Manfrotto_124_124_Clamp_for_3085.html) allows you to use the 099B as a super-long boom pole off a stand if needed.  I just picked one of these up, and the 25mm opening holds the bottom tube of the 099B securely.

I did the franken mod of Lowel Half Pole and UN-55 stand...nice compact pole-8ft of extension.

I've been thinking about this for a while...the marriage of a Lowel half pole and UN-55 stand to create a 8ft pole that collapses down to a small pole. BH had a demo UN-55 on sale so I took a  chance...

Basically remove the top section of the Half pole and the second section of the UN-55...and marry them. Nice small footprint.

I have to say...I'm very impressed with the UN-55 stand. It would do just about everything I want with one set of actives...maybe even two sets. It is a good foot taller than my Manfrotto 501b and much steadier...albeit noticeably heavier.

That's the complete Full Pole. I think Taper Chris JUST needs parts F & G, which tighten down onto the poles! I could've sworn we chatted about that awhile back and he bought my old/incomplete Full Pole. But I honestly can't remember right now because I've sold so much gear here on ts.com lol! I forget where I was going to buy JUST parts F+G at awhile back or I'd give you the links, because they always had them in stock!

That said, I love my 099B and basically any/every Manfrotto product I've owned over the years! They're always top notch quality and built to last, even though they're usually slightly more expensive than their competitors :) Worth the extra $$ IMO!

Very true Bean. I did get your old lowel full pole from you. I was trying t get the parts through barn door lighting, but items are still on back order. I check a few other suppliers to find the same answer.
