AT4031 & AT4051
« on: December 12, 2017, 12:39:45 PM »
Has anyone ever done a comparison of the AT4031 and AT4051?

I've attached frequency response graphs of each, but I've read enough DSatz posts to realize that these graphs don't necessarily tell the whole story when it comes to using the mics in an audience quite a ways from the PAs.

I've only ever owned the AT4051 (and 4051a), so I've never compared them to any of the other lines of AT SD mics.  Great mics though.  The others in that line are also great - AT4049 and AT4053 (in their a and b iterations).  Easily comparable to the AKG 460 and 480 lines IMHO (although they sound a bit different than the AKGs).  An underappreciated line of microphones and pretty affordable used (in comparison to other similar mics).

AT405x would be a candidate for active setups as well.

By the way, I've already "activated" a pair of AT3031.  These are electret capsules.  Pretty nice too, but I think not quite as nice as the 405x series...

Please DO NOT mail me with tech questions.  I will try to answer in the forums when I get a chance.  Thanks.

That's one of the reasons I'm really curious about the 4051s...if they sound like the 4031s and are in a compact active setup, sign me up!

I just haven't heard many recordings with the 4041s. Got any samples or thoughts about how it compares with the 4031 or 4051?

3 or 4 of you guys that want the actives need to go in on a test mic to send to Jon. These could be made pretty easily if the demand exists.

You would need the entire assembly and not just the cap, correct?

Yeah, it would need to be the entire mic.
