After several weeks of planning and procuring the right parts, I finally got all the pieces put together for a low profile akg rig. Going to give them a test run this weekend at the Black Mountain Fall Festival. Not a "stealth" situation, but I want to test these out before the real deal on 10/10 for Primus in Boston.

These caps don't require P48 to run properly?
-
12volt. The mk46 cable has electronics in the connector to the c460b bodies that converts the 48v to 12v.
-
NICE
you were able to find the lemo connectors for the cables or did you hack an old pair of cables?
-
Can you build this cable or do you have to buy the mk46 cable?

Bulit from scratch ;D

Nice work! Could you pm me a price on having one of these cables made?

Congrats! This is exciting!
I'm very interested in reading about your thoughts after making a few recordings with this rig.
-
Nice Ted! I'm real excited about this. So it's a standard 12V TB? Put me down for a pair of 12 foot cables. :)

Not standard, but yes 12v.

Great Job Ted!
Nice that you kept it close to the vest with no "in progress" thread, then you just showed the finished article.
Classy

Nice work, Ted.

thanks brad! I hope i didn't jump the gun since this hasn't been tested in the field, but I couldn't contain myself.

Ted,
Just out of curiosity, are you suggested that you will have to >:D for Primus? My impression has been that they are open as long as Gogol Bordello aren't in the mix... no?
If the ck1x can still be found with any regularity this rig could give the CMR team a serious run for their money (at a heck of a lot lower price).
My understanding being that that is a big "if", though.

I have not heard any reports other then no taping this tour so i am prepared for the worst, or better in this case with my new rig >:D
The ck1x caps are hard to come by, but this is certainly an exciting option for current vinatge ck_x owners.
-
Good to know. I had not heard that... I thought Gogol Bordello had been the culprit and were gone. As I have to tape them in a horrible sounding venue (Wellmont Theater in Montclair, NJ) I would certainly prefer not to have to also go incognito!
Now if you could just figure out how to rig up the ck6x series to the tinybox, you'd be the hero of the year ;D

It can be done with the AKG CK-6x caps too. We just need to develop connectors that screw onto those capsules.

Hold on. Let me clarify this:
ck1x are *electret* capsules, and their is a FET inside them.
ck6x are externally polarized capsules, and have no fet.
Note: newer ck1 capsules are externally polarized. ck1x are not made any more (and are not serviced, either).
To make ck6x (or any other externally polarized capsule) work, you need: 1) a fet behind them, usually inside a collette that screws behind the capsule, but this could be hard-wired too; 2) you need a polarization voltage (40-60v), either a step-up from a dc supply, or a bunch of batteries in series. These are not hard to do, but it is more than merely connecting to the capsule.

Yes, you are correct.
Thank you for the clarification.
I'm more excited about the (not yet achieved) CK-6x option, because as you said, those caps are still in production (to my ears sound better) and are easier to come by.

Yeah, I'm not "active" on the actives project, lol. But I wish someone like Jon would take this up. I really don't care how much he charges, but damn, that would be a nice setup. Not only do the ck6x caps sound great, but they are (relatively) inexpensive and widely available. No need to run bodies, just buy a pair of caps and go.

This is too cool! I want a set dang it. I have been wanting to get a 'lower' profile setup running a LB > M10. Guess I will have to keep my eyes on this thread and keep an eye out for some ck1x caps..

There is a set of ck1x caps in the YS already and have been there for quite some time. (with mk46 cables though)

awesome looking setup their Ted!
No one has mentioned it yet, but was that Tiny Box a specially made box just for this setup?
-
Yes, this tiny box was designed specificly for the ck_x capsules. It's a two wire set up providing 12v to the capsules.
My initial outing this weekend was a success but the sound is quite different then when run with the c460b bodies and mk46 cable. It is extremly bright and needed some tweeking in the midrange. Smokin Joe and I were recording together that day and the particular band I used for the test had a high end sound that day, ie bright cymbals, etc.
It turns out I had my cable wired wrong. I fixed it up last night and it appears to be good to go. Not sure when I am gonna get out to test with live music.

I like it. It's nice to be able to run another set of capsules and still have the 460 bodies to run with the other ck capsules.
-
Is the sound in the same league as using the bodies, I can see how there may be a different sound but just curious if there is any sacrifice in the gear chain. I used an old jk labs setup way back and this setup reminds me of that box.
-
It has a good sound but I would say that it is "warmer" then the stock 460/mk46 system.
-
That's great. Looks like the best of both worlds.
-
Definitely darker sounding with less sizzle.
Sounds clear and present with some nice bass.
-
Yeah, this could be a great compact system. The only worry for me is the age of the ck1x (electret) caps. If they are working, great. But exercise care buying these, especially on ebay.

I respectfully disagree. I have worked on this capsule, and it is.
CK1, the regular version, is externally polarized.

Yeah, I was going to respond, but I just KNEW that Richard would. :P

can you bypass the tiny box and use a set of PFA's so that you can run them with any preamp providing 12V or more of voltage?
