Title: Anyone know anything about rack mounted mixers?
Post by: ethan on November 06, 2012, 02:11:18 PM

Seems like there are a lot of 8 channel plus cheap rack mountable mixers. Anyone have any experience with any of them? Looking to replace my Soundcraft/Folio Spirit mixer with something I can put in a rack.

Any with direct outs?

I'm talking 1U/2U/4U type rack mounting.

Can't find any allen heath options like that. link?

Looking at Carvin and Rolls now.

I really like the Carvin RX1200R: http://www.carvinguitars.com/products/RX1200R (http://www.carvinguitars.com/products/RX1200R)

Rolls RM65b is only 1U and would sufficiently replace the SoundCraft Spriit: http://www.rolls.com/product.php?pid=RM65b (http://www.rolls.com/product.php?pid=RM65b)

Beringer makes a few but I think they are my last resort. Going to look at Alesis.

Allen & Heath looks like they may have made one at some point.

I pulled the trigger on the 12 channel Alesis. $180 seemed like a good deal.

havent heard too many complaints about alesis gear but have no personal experience.  what are you using it for?

I use the mix wiz in the top of a rolling rack with outboard gear below, but that is being replaced by a new console shortly.  can't wait to stop lugging that box around.

Dual use really. Live 2 track matrix mixes. 2 or more inputs from SBD + stage mics. I'll be using it this way when recording one of the venues on JamCruise for the CruiseTunes downloads.

I'm also doing live sound now. I've been working with a friend who has a production company. I work for him on gigs and I can book his gear for gigs I line up. Over many years he's determined it costs him $250 every time he sets up/tears down his gear. I seem to be able to find gigs that pay $100-200 (I bring PA) but not larger gigs.

Long story short I'm putting together a small portable live sound rack where all I need to use are his passive monitor speakers and 15" speakers/stands to run a gig. Reducing his exposure and allowing us to book more gigs. I'm still shopping for a 4 channel power amp. But that's another story.

Well the Alesis multimx 12 I bought didn't work out. Came DOA. But I'm glad it did. Since my original post I discovered the Ashly MX 508. Got one on ebay for $345. 3U 8 channels. There a few things I found cool about this mixer. First, it uses separate send/return TRS connections for each channel so the send can actually be used as a direct out, which means I can mix *AND* send to 8 track recorder. It also has sub's in so I could use a second mixer if I need more channels. It also has a midrange sweep and you can configure the aux sends to be either pre or post fader. The headphones can toggle between the master mix and the aux sends affectively giving you prefader listen ability.

I just picked up a used Alesis Multimix 8 line rackmount mixer at Guitar Center to $29. I've read that some of them have a hum but this one seems quiet. It does have the tip of a trs connector broken off in the right channel of one of the channels but since I intend to use it for mostly mono inputs to extend my console at times, that's not a big problem.

As far as Ashly gear, I've heard nothing but good things about them. I have an old Ashly compressor that is my favorite.
