AT853 windscreen question
« on: July 09, 2004, 01:14:42 AM »
i have a pair of AT853's that i recently purchased

while sneaking them in to stealth a show i lost one of the windscreens

since then, i have taped one outdoor show with them at about 11 ft, there was no noticeable wind sounds on the tape but it was not very windy that day....I am taping another show on saturday that is outside and i am worried about wind...are there any hardware/fabric stores that i can buy styrofoam from to temporarily use because i dont have time to order online and i dont think they would have anything at guitar center???

the weather forcast says there will be 6mph winds....do you think it will be a factor?

the show is at a ymca in downtown chicago, the stage will probably be set up in a soccer feild or something

Wind will always be a factor with these mics without windscreens. I had a pair and taped outdoors a few times. Any wind seemed to give lots of rumble in the mics I had the windscreens and the t-bar bigger windscreens. You could try some foam from a place like Michaels crafts store and form them yourself but the sonic characteristics could be compromised. Unfortunately you will have to experiment.

do the at831/853 stock windscreens really do much of anything outside anyway though?

the stock windscreen that came in the 853a package works fairly well.  the stock one for 831b are too small for outdoor use.

hmmm...trying to record a festival show (on the beach, so expect a fair bit of wind) this weekend, with AT831s (SPCMC2s).

Anyone got any last minute suggestions?

Here's some info for DIY windscreens:

Go to Home Depot and go to the weather stripping section.  They have rolls of foam weather stripping are an inch square (give or take, can't remember the exact dimensions) and many feet long.  (They have no adhesive on them).  I used an electric bread cutter to shape it.  Making the hole in the foam for the mic is the most difficult part.  I used a teeny drill bit to put a whole where I wanted it, then used gradually bigger sized drill bits until it was the size that would fit the mic capsules.

You can get the thicker windscreens from SoundProfessionals.com.  I don't remember the part number, but when I get a moment this morning I'll check and update the post.

I don't know what hat you use, but when I ran with a Kangol, it gave me double the insulation.  Even a windy day in the mountains, recording Mr. Dylan, I had almost no wind.

Damn, I typed a response but somehow it didn't make it... long story short: Shure RK318WS, doesn't fit tight but snug enough not to fall off, no audible wind noise for me in ~5mph wind
