AT8438 microphone mount vs Premium T mount
« on: August 07, 2004, 09:25:55 PM »
i purchased some AT853's a few months ago,i didnt get a stand until last week when i picked up a 13 footer for 40bucks on ebay

now, im kinda interested in this mic mount from sound professionals

the retail price is 40 bucks but ive got about 10$ worth of reward points from purchasing my mics there, and they offer a 10% discount for members of this board so it would be around 28 bucks total

description is here http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?item=SP-DTS-11

will i be able to acheive the necessary positions for ortf, din, xy, etc...? should i get the 7.5 inch or 14.5 inch width (10$ extra)??

right now i have shure rotating clips so i could build a ghetto mount i suppose and clip on but i think this might be better in the long run...

or should i go with this tbar mount for mini mics which is the same price

info is here http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-GNA-3

so should i go at8438 mount or tmount or are there materials i can buy from home depot to construct a good mount with my shure rotating clips?

the AT mic mounts are included in the AT853a set. i use them all the time with an akg bar. XY can be achieved, but i never ran ortf. i also use it along with a Shure vert bar.

You probably should go with the AT mount. The T-bar won't allow for much configuration other than AB stereo.

For what it's worth I use AT853's in Audix SMT-MICRO mounts on a generic T-bar, the mounts are a little tight but they work well, probably not much shock protection.

Absolutely false.  Used for everything...A-B, split omnis, XY DIN, NOS, ORTF.  You can bend it into any config you need.

I've heard that the second option (the t-bar mount) does not hold its position very well. You can bend it into whatever configuration, it just won't stay put.

I have the first option and have only used it a couple of times. It seems to work fine, but I have not really measured whether it will allow precise ORTF, DIN, etc. You can do XY, but the mics are not completely flat horizontally, you have to *slightly* angle one or both of the mounts to get them to cross XY. I suppose you could put some kind of spacer on one of the mounts where it attaches to the T-bar.

Hope this helps!

Oh yeah....I plan on getting full sized wond screens to go over the ends of the mounts, the tiny screens that come with the tiny mics are worhtless.

I use it for split omni's, and I can't imagine trying to get it to stay put in DIN, or ORTF, so whatever to your absolutely false comment.

I use it all the time.  Mine will stay in position and that's all I have to go on.

You might want to do a little math to find out the difference between centimeters and inches. Then, check out www.dpamicrophones.com go to the microphone university for the exact measurements of the different configurations, that way you'll know if the smaller mount will be able to do all the configs you need. Hope that helps!

I would say pay the extra $10.  The little bit of extra length may help with split omnis.  You could always get someone to drill out two more holes where they would have been on the 7.5" bar.

-or-

If you can buy the mounts seperate, I have that exact t-bar in 7.5" you can have.  Its missing one of the 3/8"» 5/8" adapters but those are cheap.
