It seems to me that this essentially turns a record into a large and extra delicate cd that you have to flip halfway through....cool tech stuff yes, but I'm more of a mechanical guy I guess and prefer the turntable

There will be patents to infringe upon, no doubt, vinyl has been around a long time.

I don't understand why a record scanner hasn't been released.

That site is 2002, and proof of concept.
A serious, multiangle, multi-lightband scan should be able to reproduce infinitely more than any mechanical device.
