Mini XLR cable
« on: March 20, 2004, 02:31:15 AM »
Gonna be getting my ATs modded to run on phantom power.  Want to run the power modules in the bag so I'm gonna need about a 10' run of cable with mini XLRs on both ends.  I have a enough Belden 1804A laying around to get them done.  Is this gonna be beefy enough cable?  I'm kinda thinking it won't be...doesn't seem to have very much shielding.

mogami makes 3 conductor cables that are considered "mini" cables and are well shielded. i can't recall what the model # is at the moment.

AT makes mini cables that will fit those miniXLR nicely and are well shielded.

Perhaps a simple solution is available for my situation:

I just bought a pair of AT853a's and would like to plug them into my UA-5 to run on phantom power. The AT's have what seems to be Mini-XLR connectors at the end of their 25-ft-long cables (see image).

Are there adapters available anywhere that I can get to plug these into the standard XLR inputs on the UA-5, or will I need to build a cable with a one of each connector type on the ends?

ahh, the good 'ole AT853a!!

you MUST use a phantom power module to run the AT853 on 48v phantom.

i use the AT8533 Phantom Power Module. they are $59/ea from AT directly.

i've been told that the Samson SAM-PM4 does the same task. $29 from SPro.

OK. I've got two AT power modules which came with the mics, so I should be in good shape.

One looks like a cigar - (AT8505), the other is the size/shape of a cigarette pack (AT8531). They both have what appears to be a bass roll-off setting as well as normal.

I suppose I just need to make some female->male XLR cables.

Thanks!

my AT853a also came with the AT8531 battery pack/phantom power module.  either one of your modules will work as well.

Can't seem to find any 'mini' cable anywhere.  Anyone have model #s?

don't know if these will be small enough for you, but....

Canare L-4E5C is the "narrow profile" version of the StarQuads.  SQ's ODia. is 6.00mm and L-4E5C's ODia. is 4.8mm.

if you want something smaller than that, you may want to contact AudioTechnica directly.  the cable that is afixed to the AT853 (see photo above) is 3.2mm (OD).

the AT cables are VERY small, but well shielded and contains 5 conductors.  i've modded AT853 caps before and will tell you that the conductors/cables are well made.

perhaps, AT could sell you some raw cables.

Funny, I just ordered parts to do this today. I'm going to mod my SP AT933s. For now I just got two switchcraft mini XLR connectors for the ends of my 6' cables that currently have a stereo miniplug. I had to call Markertek to find them as they weren't on the site. Markertek does however have mini xlr cables and mini xlr > xlr too.
