Wavelab 5.0 multitrack
« on: August 20, 2004, 03:15:56 PM »
Anyone done this yet?

I had it going at home once, (two analogs from cassette deck and two digitals from v3), but then had too many beers when it was time to apply it in the field.   ::)

I'm curious about others experiences.  I think that you have to record 4 mono channels instead of 2 stereo pairs.  No complaints as that will help with the 2GB file size limit anyway.

Trying to avoid reading the instructions.  :-D

2 GB limit? Wouldn't the auto splint feature solve that or does that not apply when mulitracking.

I would like to learn how to set multitracking up as well. Nothing fancy, just a V3 AUD pull and an analog left/right SBD pull so I can mix it later at home. I would do more matrixes if it would eliminate the syncing of two separate sources.

To multitrack in Wavelab 5, you have to use the ASIO drivers. Start my going to Options>Preferences and click on the "Audio Card" tab. Using the "Playback" drop-down, select the ASIO driver for the device you are using. The "Recording" section will gray out. Here's what it looks like on my tower with a M-Audio FW 1814:

Then click on the "Connections" button and you will see channel mapping options, based upon what you have available:

Here you can choose which inputs you want to use for your device. Once set your inputs, click OK and then open the Record window. You'll see a bar there like this:

Click on it and it will open a dialog window to set recording mode:

Under "Channels," you can set either "Multi Mono," which will give you individual mono files for each input; or "Multi Stereo/Mono" which pairs inputs logically (1 & 2, 3 & 4, etc). You can also set bit & sample rates here. Once done, click OK

Next, in the Record window, there is an Input section with a button on the far right (it may or may not have a number).:

Make sure the "Audio card input (hardware)" is selected and click on the button. Once you click on the button, you will see Recording Channels window:

Here you can choose the which of the available inputs you wish to use. Once you've selected the channels you wish to record, click OK and you will be returned to the Record window, looking something like this. Note the extra meter pairs in the Record window:

If you're recording in high rates, make sure to check the 'Split Mode' box and click on settings. Here you can enter the split argument. I normally set it at 1900 MB.

Keep in mind that I haven't gotten Wavelab 5 & the FW1814 to cooperate on the ASIO driver; but I've only been using a demo version and I'm not able to apply the ASIO patch Steinberg has. I think I'll get on to M Audio's tech support to see if I can find anything out from that end.

+T, nice helpful pics

I'll have to try this at home.

In the last pic I noticed the pause memory is set at 2 sec. I think I changed mine to zero b/c I was worried about missing music ??? Should I change this back to 2 secs.

I set mine to zero also (on the lappy); but I ran the pics off my tower and the default comes up at 2 seconds.

Edit: the Help on Wavelab sez that the 'pause memory' only affects how recording is processed when using the 'Pause' button.

"This is a "safety buffer" for when you are using the Pause button in the Record dialog to make pauses in the recording: When you resume recording after having been in Pause mode, WaveLab will use this buffer to capture the last short section of audio before you deactivated the Pause button. This way, you don't have to worry about missing something when in Pause mode - you can have time to resume recording even after you hear what you want to record!"

Unfortunately, the Sony Laptop is XP home.

I have a Sony Vaio XP running WaveLab 5.0a. No problems to report. I've wipped it clean once, reinstalled everything, still no problems.  I don't recall using ASIO drivers either. At least I didn't do anything 'extra'. Seems I recall others runing into problems when trying to use ASIO drivers. May need to do a search on that.

when I first got my 410 I ran it on my DAW which has XP pro. didn't have one problem (although I never tried ASIO drivers). I JUST got my lappy and put XP home on it and the two times I've tried it I've had problems with the 410, and I tried the WDM as well as ASIO.  I've also read that other 410 users have had greater success with pro than home.

well I'm trying to switch to pro now, but damn, I would love to find out about that ASIO patch for Wavelab because I've also read that not a lot of people have been able to successfully run Wavelab ASIO drivers.

I've never gotten ASIO to work in Wavelab 5 with a vxPocket 440. I can get it to run, but it will flake when I click a button or check channels and say that my card doesnt support that bit depth and sample rate. I then have to log out of Wavelab and restart. Seems like I remember reading there is a bug? I have been able to multitrack in Vegas 5 though perfectly and it syncs beautifully with SF 7 for editing, etc. I only use Wavelab to dither nowadays, but I may even quit using it for that.
I don't know just where I'm going
But I'm gonna try for the kingdom, if I can

I found these over on the Cubase forum.  I am not affiliated and therefore suggest using every mode of caution before downloading and installing unknown files onto your computer.

latest WaveLab patch
ftp://ftp.pinnaclesys.com/Steinberg/download/Downloads_PC/WaveLab/Wavelab_501a/WaveLab-5.01a-(Build-231)-Patch.zip

cd/dvd driver update
ftp://ftp.pinnaclesys.com/Steinberg/download/Downloads_PC/Hardware/CDR_Drivers/RecorderUpdate_19_09_04.zip

Also got a little nosey and found patches for all of the 4.0x's here

ftp://ftp.pinnaclesys.com/Steinberg/download/Downloads_PC/WaveLab/

...Kk

nice work.
their cd/dvd drivr was CRAP. it completely removed my dvdr drive and I couldnt get it back, unitl I uninstalled waelab. I'll test out the v5 patch to see if it fixes the asio problem
