should be pretty much plug and play assuming you have win2k or XP and an empty pci slot

its a snap...provided you have an extra pci slot on the back of your comp....it should just slide in...close up the comp..turn it on.and let windows recognize the device..it will ask you if you want to search for drivers or use provided(cd)....make your choice..let the dirvers install...and then you are done!

why not return the external burner and get an internal -- just about as easy to replace your internal cdrom with a dvd burner (and you'd save some coin)

yes..BUT..if you are doing multiple shows on the road..and have a laptop..this would be great for backups....I am thinking hard about an external....just cant make up my mind...65$ for internal(newegg) is SCHWEET!

SLIGHTLY more advanced, but putting an internal drive into an enclosure would make it an external and generally, internal + enclosure are less than the price of an external (newegg will ahve the goods)

how do you hook it up to the comp after that...is there a way to convert the plug to usb 2.0??  and what about power...I have never thought about encasing an internal.....my interest is peaked now.... +T

the enclosure will a) provide an interface that will convert the ide to usb2 (or firewire) and will generally supply power via a wallwart (that's how my 3.5" enclosure powers my ide hard drive) -- all external drives generally consist of is a standard internal drive encased in a branded enclosure.

get dvdshrink from dvdshrink.org and install nero, super easy to use.

Re the internal dvd suggestion -- didn't realize you'd had this for a while, my comments were made assuming you could return the one you had.

bean, here's a guide on how to get the files onto your pc:
http://www.audiophilia.net/dvddecrpytrip.htm

after you rip them to your hard drive, you can use dvd shrink to make them smaller, if they're dual layer dvd9 discs.

start dvd shrink, choose 'open files'.  you can then change the compression settings to whatever you need to to fit the movie onto a standard single layer dvd.

you can find more info here:

on my dvd shrink, i hit open file, and then once it's opened, merely hit "Backup" to burn it to a cd (it launches nero to do this automatically.

you dont necessarily have to make an .iso either. this is exactly what i do

insert dvd

click open disc, select the disc from the menu it gives you

hit the re-author button at the top

drag whatever is in the section "main movie" onto the left hand margin

hit the backup button

i used to used the option to place hard disc folder as the "select backup target" menu. i now just use .iso's. but with the hard disc folder option you can click the box and make the dvd extract to audio & video_ts folders .

make sure it is set to region free setting on the 2nd tab

backup quality settings tab. check the deep analasis box, and i use the maximum sharpness option on the bottom drop down menu (these 2 options have worked best for me)

alot of the dvd's i rip are dual layer, so re-authoring the movie to only have the main movie strips all previews and bullshit before the movie, and all extras after the movie (you could actually pick and choose if you wanted particular things in the re-author tab), and the end result makes the movie less compressed to fit on a regular dvd

i have done some that i copied the entire dual layer disc and compressed to 4.7gb, and they seem to look ok, but i can tell the difference beetween them, and one i re-author and compress significantly less

i had been having problems ripping a few movies with dvd_shrink, they happened to ALL be movies with Angelina Jolie in them, and i got dvd decrypter to rip those

sorry for the rant, hope this helps ya Beaner
