JB3 usb vs firewire???
« on: December 29, 2004, 04:31:38 PM »
didn't see anything in the FAO about this.  if it's there sorry.  how much slower are transfers with the usb?  my computer doesn't have firefire and I've already spent a lot of money the last two weeks.  are they both just as accurate??

USB 2 is actually faster than Firewire. Same end results. :)

I do not have usb 2.0, just usb 1.1 (i think it is 1.1) and I cannot tranfer large files from the jukebox via usb, not sure what the deal is, but the damned thing just pukes every time.  So i only transfer via firewire.  that is my story though, i think most machines nowadays have built in usb 2.0...

How old is your machine? That is usually the best wat to tell. Otherwise, right click My Comp > Properties > Hardware Tab > Device Manager > Look for Universal Serial Bus Controller, expand that and see if you see anything in there about USB 2.0. If not, then you probably dont have it. You can get a firewire or a usb 2 card for pretty cheap. Shouldn't be more than $20 tops.

Edit:

You can also just plug it in and test it. See if Windows sees it as a high-speed device. If that doesn't work. Try a transfer. If it takes more than a few minutes (2-3 max), then you prolly don't.

FYI...

Firewire 400 transfers at 400Mpbs
Firewire 800 transfers at 800Mbps
USB 1 transfers at 12Mbps (I think)
USB 2 transfers at 480Mbps.

I'm pretty sure the jb3 is only a usb 1 device, so it won't really matter what you have on your computer, it will only transfer as fast as the jb3 will push the data to the pc.

Firewire cards are CHEAP -- should be able to find one for $20 --

Regardless, the jb3 is passing the music to the pc as data, firewire and usb SHOULD be equally accurate in the transfer, just a lot longer on usb (but still faster than realtime transfers)

FYI...

Firewire 400 transfers at sustained 400Mpbs
Firewire 800 transfers at sustained 800Mbps
USB 1 transfers at 12Mbps bursts (I think)
USB 2 transfers at 480Mbps bursts

Fixed for ya.  Firewire 400 is in practical use faster than USB2. ;)

this is a cardbus card for a laptop. i bought this same one from ebay for $0.99 about 4mo ago and it works great.

usb works, and its still better than realtime dat transfers, but a jb3 via firewire transfer is probably the next best thing to taping right onto your computer/laptop...at least at 16bit

don't walk, run, to buy that 1394 FW card you'll never regret it. If you're like me, just knowing that the USB is WAY slower than FW is enough to get me off the dime... YMMV

QFT..  RUN.

Those usb transfers are SO much slower (and in my case almost always crash/puke before finishing).

USB 2 is as fast as Firewire but Firewire has been achieving those speeds successfully for much longer. Still some quirks with 2.0 from time to time. Although I havent had problems with my 1 to 3 target burner using 2.0

USB 2 is as fast as Firewire

No it's not, as stated before.  The key is throughput.

USB 2 is as fast as Firewire

not quite. usb2 peaks as fast as firewire, but sustained throughput is slower than firewire.
besides, the jb3 is usb1.1, not 2. for transferring jb3>pc, firewire will run mad rings around usb

I don't see how that makes them "rule for audio" but ok ;D

Michael D. Jonas invented FireWire as an international standard--he just happened to be working for Apple at the time and after a little begging they smartly implimented it.  Apple does, however, own some legal rights to the term "FireWire" and "i.Link" I believe.

it was a joint Apple/Sony spec, not just Apple

Yep. Apple likes to use the term firewire and Sony calls it iLink.

Right.  ::)  Apple and Sony worked together to develop the standard known as firewire and published it as an IEEE standard so anyone can use it.
