I am tired of the Edirol UA-1D! I use laptop, what do I do???
« on: January 28, 2006, 12:18:29 AM »
I am sick of the pops and clicks envolved in the UA-1D transfers from dat.  I see that the UA-1D is not bit perfect when I search to find.  "The Edirol products are NOT bit perfect, so while the UA-1D is a great tool, it will resample your DATs...  Bad..." says twatts from 3/17/04

I see that the Zoltrix with optical inputs is fine but does not work with Windows XP home.  I know more were posted from M-Audio but nothing is working out for me.  Someone please let me know what I can order tomorrow to stop putting seeds up on etree that are full of the pops & clicks.  Thanks to anyone that can help.

Peace,

JMC

Actually this is funny shit....you 'putting seeds up on etree that are full of the pops & clicks'.

The  AOpen AW 850 deluxe has the C-Media CMI8738 chipset and is the same chipset in the M-Audio DIO24/48 and Zoltrix.  Do your homework properly little Padwan....

for a laptop, you could always get a VX pocket.

I use a m-audio transit, it is reasonably cheap( I think I bought mine for around 80 on amazon) external buscard and have never had any issues with it.  Can record in 16 or 24 bit.  I think a few people on here use it and have never heard of anyone having any issues with it.  Optical input.  A vx card would be more ideal for simple laptop taping but this serves my purposes better as I can easily swap this to my pc for trasferring my dats.  Lots of options out there, just look around.

There are several VX Pockets in the yard sale section. Mine has been in there for a while. Just did a few DAT transfers with it yesterday.

I like the m-audio audiophile usb with my laptop.  However, it only outputs max 24/48.  It does a nice job as an input device from DAT.  Even better has been the microtrack 24/96 because it frees up my computer while I'm doing transfers.

I'm going to out on a limb and say the UA-1D is not the culprit and the reason for the pops and clicks. I'm guessing it's a configuration issue on the PC. I've used a UA-1D on both my old Windows laptop and on my iBook for about 3 years now with no such pops and clicks. I'm pretty sure a search will show how to set up and configure the PC to record audio properly. If your just tranfering DATs I'd say get a Audiophile USB or something similar.

may be true, however, when i owned a UA-1D, everything that passed thru it was littered w/ clicks/pops

its not bit-perfect and should be thrown away w/ the garbage for transferring

I haven't had any problems with my UA-1D introducing clicks & pops on the wav files.  My software has some issues with it that I have learned to overcome (I have to start the transfer using a particular process that I finally figured out through trial & error).  From the research that I've done on the UA-1D, I believe the whole 'not bit perfect' issue is way overblown.  The UA-1D fits in fine with the rest of my rig:  Cheap & Outdated  ;)

Everything everyone says about the UA-1D is true. However it is a useful thing to have in your bag. At the very least it gives yours laptop access to your DA converter. You might say, "but it resamples the output too!!!" But then again so does the Benchmark DA/headphone amp that everyone loves so much...

I had endless problems running a UA-1D into windozes xp usb 2.0 I dont think this was a problem with the UA-1D however ,when my hard drive died I installed Mandrake 10.0 and Audacity and I have never had one single problem since,I have transfered endless dats to hd and even did some live taping in clubs when I had a lil protection for the laptop.
On a side note not to hijack this tread ,I'm running ubuntu on my old old desktop and I swear its a like new computer, I'm probably going to buy a new desktop, prices on refurbs are looking pretty sweet to me right now
