Bit Torrent - NetGear WGR614 V6
« on: September 13, 2006, 01:11:41 PM »
I have a problem that has been driving me crazy for months...I think my router may be a piece of junk....or I'm an idiot  ::)

I'm always being shown as firewalled after reading numerous documents and making numerous configuration changes.  I have a Netgear WGR614 router and have done the following:

Assigned a static IP to my machine - 192.168.1.20

I have port forwarded bit torrent to start at port 12345 - 12350.  I read that some ISP's block the 6881 range, so I setup BT to start at port 12345.

When I look at the lists on Dime and other sites, it DOES show me on port 12345, (one machine only), but says I'm still firewalled.

I must not have the Netgear set correctly, I used a couple of doc's to setup the forwarding but still doesn't work.

Does anyone use a Netgear WGR614, and is not firewalled.

This is driving me nuts........... :o

you've done everything correctly so far, but you now need to configure your router to pass all requests for ports 12345 - 12350 to your static IP.

i don't know what your config screens look like, but for my linksys the relevant section is called "applications and gaming"

did you make sure to click "enable" to allow the port forwarding to occur?  I sometimes forget, and then wonder why I'm still firewalled for a little while, until I look again, and then smack the forhead.

What is the router behind?  My router (Linksys WRT54G) is behind a DSL modem that does some NAT... so I have to forward ports on that as well...

Ahh.... It's a  Motorola Surfboard...never thought of that...wonder if I could just bridge the modem, just like DSL, ( I have Time Warner cable)

That's what I figured, but I just switch to the modem after my Linksys crapped out out a month ago.  I had the same issue with the Linksys modem, which brings me back to the Netgear.

I'm about ready to junk it and try another vendor.

is windows firewall still on?

ding-ding-ding!

or are you running comodo or zone alarm or other firewall software?

You must explicitly open your ports in WindowsXP sp2 or disable the firewall (not a good idea)

You could try and bypass the netgear and plug straight into your surfboard.  If you are still firewalled than it's some software on your pc blocking.  Then you will have to turn off any firewall software one at a time until you figure it out.

I'll bet cash money the problem is the NetGear router. I had one that didn't work w/ bittorrent right out of the box.

If that is the case, try a Westell 327W DSL Modem/Router ($14.99). Works like a charm w/ torrenting.

Good luck.

Just got a Linksys (Cisco) WRT54GL for 60 EUR, which I installed OpenWRT (Linux) on. I have never been happier.

I've port-forwarded many flavors of Netgear routers without difficulty, but I've never used a WGR614 version 6.
I trust that you're following the directions from:
http://www.portforward.com/

They have been pretty much on the money, although sometimes a little twisted
