Suggestions on what to do with a loud/clapping crowd between songs?

I have Soundforge and wavelab at my disposal

I am just not sure if there is an easier way to go about it other then going song by song?

quite a n00b question maybe, but I've mostly just listened, dither/resample and tracked my recordings. No real post edit knowledge

so, thanks in advance

and please move to the computer recording section if necessary. I am hoping it is an open enough topic maybe

Try a search in this forum for "compression".

envelope in soundforge. set at 100%, drag the center of the form down to like 30% and the ends stay at 100%. Looks like a pretty close to "capital U" form.

A short burst from an Uzi after the first song usually resolves this.  Make sure to turn down your levels during the gunfire.

Sometimes I take a look at the db levels of the music just prior to the crowd coming in.  Find the db value, then hard limit to a point just before the music level db (highlight that area and get the statistics).

Sometimes I do this on both channels separately, sometimes I do 1 real hard, and another less so.  When it's less so, it's because I would like to keep a bit of the clapping (not the annoying loud stuff) just for ambience and a natural feel.

Hard limiting will often change the character of the sound for the worse, especially if you knock the level down too far.  Use a soft knee limiter and drop the knee point down where it sounds right to you.
