cd paranoia for os x
« on: November 20, 2003, 11:37:20 AM »
i've seen people ask about EAC or cd paranoia or similar things for mac os x

well, there are a few options

cd paranoia is included in xcdroast (www.xcdroast.org), although you need x11 to run it.  not a big deal, but it's kind of clunky and annoying when all you want is the extraction.  seems dumb to use an x11 program to just extract tracks

there is also the cdda2wav unix binary, which can use a paranoia library in version 2.0  to extract using paranoia mode.  this is included in the latest fink cdda2wav-beta (part of the latest cdrtools-beta) and is used via command line.  easy to use, though some people hate the command line

i've found one non x11 front end so far for cdrtools called aquaburn, though i haven't tested it yet.  if it sucks, i may write my own front end.  it wouldn't do much, and i'm pretty positive i wouldn't put burn capabilities in.  seems like a waste of my time when toast works pretty damn well for burning.

 it'd probably just do this

1. extract all tracks in a disc using paranoia mode
2. extract certain tracks using paranoia mode

that's it.  small app, but it'd do what EAC and cdparanoia do, since it *is* cd paranoia (it would use the compiled binary)

any interest?

did iTunes change their extraction routine?
iTunes does perfect DAE(or at least it did)

itunes never had any error correction.  now it has some, but it's still nowhere near EAC or cd paranoia

weird, for years on etree they recomended iTunes for DAE on macs as it was perfect DAE. have they now changed their recomendation?

just checked etree and they dont mention ANY cd-ripper for macs anymore.

then again, you can also use diskcopy to create a image of the cd. . .

i never remember them recommending itunes for extraction....

it used to be toast audio extractor as best bet on os 9 (though not guaranteed perfect) or xcdroast for x..

It used to be Toast Audio Extractor, which has apparently gone away. The only common OS X option was iTunes so I'm not surprised if that was their recommendation. I tried Track Thief too but never had much confidence in it, and it was also OS X and only extracted to AIFF - which at the time was useless if you then want to shorten the files.

Scott, I'm all for a cdparanoia front-end that does what you describe. I've tried and failed multiple times with xcdroast - I keep getting bus errors with the latest build, although I can at least get the track listing to show up now - and I agree that firing up X11 for one function is irritating.

Is this the aquaburn you speak of?

yeah that's the one.  i'm going to try it out tonight, and check to see if the binaries he links too contain the latest cdda2wav that has paranoia included

plenty of apps can drop in a marker and split by markers like cdwav.  they just don't do it and cut on sector boundaries.

on a pc, you might
1. split in cdwav on sector boundaries
2. convert to shn or flac

on the mac, you can
1. split in an audio app
2. fix sector boundaries and convert to shn/flac in one step

both are 2 steps

I know I can split in a audio app like Peak or DP, but it is a severe pain-in-the-ass and takes too much time to extract 1 region at a time
(new DP4 do all regions at the same time now? dont know as I use DP3)

on a pc i can do the same thing in SoundForge, Vegas, Wavelab, etc....but just like in the Mac apps, its 1 region at a time....CDWave does the whole set/show in the same amount of time as it takes SF, Peak, DP, Wavelab to do 1 region.
this is why I say Mac needs a CDWave clone. the Mac 2 steps take much longer than the PC 2 steps(with CDWave)

also, isnt it ideal to split on sector-boundaries rather than split THEN fix the sector boundaries?

huh?  look at Sound Studio or Spark ME.

drop in markers (like cdwav) and then tell it to split by markers in sound studio, or export regions to audiofile in spark.  it writes out separate tracks based on the markers, just like in cdwav

never used those apps...will have to look into them.

"isnt it ideal to split on sector-boundaries rather than split THEN fix the sector boundaries?"
what are your thoughts on this?

Peak and DP3 are the only audio apps I have used on Mac and when it came to tracking a show out it was always much faster to transfer to my pc then track out in CDWave.

thanks

digital performer isn't made to do tracking stuff, it's more of a creation app than an editing app

peak just plain sucks.  i've tried to believe in peak, but steve berkley has assured me that his "flagship" piece of software will never do what i want it to by lying repeatedly to users on their bias list and user forums

spark rocks, and sound studio is pretty damn good for a shareware app too

as for your question of "isn't it ideal to split on sector boundaries to begin with?"  doesn't matter to me.  gotta do it sometime, as long as i can do it in one place i don't care where it is done.

apps that don't split on sector boundaries allow you to split exactly where you want to split, where cdwav will only let you split tracks on a multiple of 588 samples

Not in my experience...like Scott says, it's two steps either way you do it ("Just two easy steps...thanks, xACT!" ;D). As long as the program you're using to split doesn't automatically pad the sectors upon splitting (and I can't imagine why it would), the samples are all still there, and are all herded into the right sector by the shntool fix.

Sound Studio takes maybe a minute or two to split the tracks up - and it's easy as hell to drop markers - just Command-M.
