Topic: Sony ECM-MS957

I know there's a few of us on here that use this mic.  I've taped with it as a backup to my Church mics ever since I started taping.  The mic is decent but since it is a backup it has always gone into my backup recorder which was a JB3 so the recordings had a terribly low signal in most cases resulting in some hiss and diginoise on the master especially on quieter recordings.  Basically, I have had mixed results with the mic with more in the negative than not but not exactly because of the mic itself.    I recently got another newer recorder so hopefully I'll pull some sources from the mic with more consistency.  Maybe others on here have some insight or experience with this mic?

There are sources that state "2 Sony ECM-MS957" in the recording info.  Would this work like 2 Mics placed ORTF > 5 pin XLR > 1/8" L/R Coupler > Line In?  I think there are a couple of these sources on archive that sound decent.  Seems like a recording like this would have a better stereo image than just one ECMMS but I really wouldn't know for sure.

Sony's specs on the mic claim it to be "midside."  I really know nothing about midside but for some reason it does not seem this mic would be sufficient to explore that type of setup.  In the case it is a midside, how would that come into play with the 2XECMs above ^?


The good experiences I have had with the mic are few but prove it can have great results...

On a closing note, the mic sucks for stealth.
