LSD2 in the Section (new toy, want ideas)
« on: November 24, 2004, 12:09:25 AM »
How would you run it ? This is an arena - sized venue.

M-S ?
Blumlein ?
X-Y Cardioid, and if so at what angle ? 90^  ?  Point at stack ?

My first takes:
Blumlein would seem to noisy. M-S would take some post, but I would do it, if worth the trouble.
My first guess was to go simply at X-Y and 90 degrees,  but I'm definitely open for suggestions.

Assuming this is a stereo mic?

I'd run M/S personally.... you can get your tape perfectly dialed in after the show.
I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

i agree.  Being able to change the stereo width after the fact is cool as shit.  i really don't like xy, too narrow of an image.

having just run my lsd2 from the section using m/s, I can definitely say it's worth doing, I loved being able to optimize the stereo image after the fact -- be sure to set the mic up so that the left channel is the mid (card facing forward) and the right channel is the side (figure 8 pointing from side to side).

I used the built in pan/expand feature in soundforge to decode the m/s info -- interested in other's opinions on better programs/plugins for this function.

Have fun!

Waves has an MS decoder plugin (S1-MS Matrix), and Nuendo has Tools1 plugin built in.  But i just do it the old fashioned way, clone the S+ chan to another track, flip the phase, and off you go...

Assuming this is a stereo mic?

Asian sort of copy of a Neumann SM-69, but runs on phantom.
Stereo mic, caps turn. caps are Omni (why?) figure-8, and cardioid

(FWIW, Blumlein is also called Stereosonic....)

FYI, ran 70° Cards from the section (back end of Tweeter)
M-S wouldn't seem to have been much help as the main obstacle was the room's strong low bass resonance.
The side was a lot of bass echo, and I guess that I would had to cut it almost 100%
.......unless the figure8 would have phase cancelled it and cleaned it up some.

Should have tried one set M-S, but only had 2 to tape due to traffic hassles.

I've never used a stereo mic, and I guess I never gave it much thought, but you can change the included angle, eh? Interesting.

The sound is phat and accurate. Great low end extension with clear mids and great, open top end.
So far, I'm liking mine.
I want to play with it a LOT more.
Perhaps on solo guitar vocalist and in small chamber environments.

Also looking forward to a decent venue to tape in or at least a good placement.

Tim, if you want to try one around NJ, let me know. Have rig, will travel.    ;)
You can grab a patch out of the FR-2t or I'll patch from you.
I'm happy to show off the new toy.

If you like it, buy John's, I doubt that I'm parting with mine very soon.
I'd have bought his, but it got confusing just before SCI/RRE Camden, so I got one from the Oade's,
which showed up, Fed-Ex, at 5PM Saturday afternoon.  I unwrapped it inside the Tweeter.  :o

BTW, the SCI show is in the kickdown section.............

hehe, at first glance I thought you where asking a question about doing LSD in the section, which usually isn't the best idea ;D

I saw that mic flying but I never made it over to ask what you were running.  Cool new toys.
