what would be your dream kit?
« on: January 02, 2005, 03:28:51 PM »
i am currently running a quite high-end, but not very portable setup for the chamber music i do.  i have pairs of DPA 4006s (omnis), DPA 4011s, AKG c481s, AT4051s, and DPA 4061s, with 8 channels of millennia media HV3 preamps, into a roland vs1880.  in the past, i have also owned pairs of tlm103s, km184s, royer r-121s, rode NTKs, gefell m300s, and many others.  i think out of all themics i have used, i sort of like the akg c481s the best - i can literally use them on anything in almost any kind of situation, though i also like the sound of the DPA omnis - a more spacious and lush sound, though they dont image quite as well as ORTF cards.  however, blumlein ribbons are often wonderful for chamber music in many situations hwere condensers can come across as sort of too crispy, even harsh, for strings and woodwinds.  i am considering dropping abunch of my current gear in favor of a nice portable 2 channel system, and may move back to a blumlein ribbon setup like the royer sf12, or maybe a akg c426b.

so, a couple of questions for you guys who have used every preamp, converter, and mic known to mankind:

1.  what would be your absolute dream 2-channel setup - mics, pres, converters, recorder?
2.  are there any of the portable 2 channel preamps that can handle ribbons effectively?  maybe the sonosax?  others?

thanks.

Money is no object?  Probably that SPA modified AKG c33e that Chris runs > V3 > SD744t

And as for your second question, that same Chris used to run the Royer SF-12 ribbon mic, so he might be able to help you with that (VA_TAPER is his name on here).

would love to play with the Gefell UM900 LD mics..those things look sooo sweet, run those into my V3 and then into say a SD744 and I would be happy.  ;D

Recording Device:  744t
                               Cantar-X
                               Diva

FYI, it's DEVA, although it's pronouced Diva...   :P

Also for what it's worth, you don't need a pre-amp with the Cantar or DEVA, 744T I don't know, but my understanding is the basic design internally is similar to their 442, so you probably wouldn't need it for the 744T either.

My Dream rig?

Old Mics:
EW SR-77
EW QTC-1

New Mics:
EW QTC-1
DPA 4011

Old Recording Device:
DEVA IV

New:
DEVA IV

That's about all I would switch for my dream system. I won't ever run 2 mics again unless it's absolutely necessary, I'm always going to run an omni in there somewhere.

Wayne, thanks for the correct spellling for the deva.  i know none of the devices need a pre per se, but it would be fun to have all the gear on the list.
Nice to have the option for that omni.

The DEVA and Cantar give you multiple mic inputs, so you really don't need the pre. The 744T if you want more than 2 microphones, you will need a pre, since you have 4 inputs, but only two are phantom powered mic inputs, the other two are line inputs.
