Just recieved my Busman mod UA5 Friday...and have a few questions...
Does it only provide 24 bit? I cant find any way to switch if possible...A NON 24 bit device will not accept 24 bit correct?
I understand certain ins and outs are disabled with the Busman mod.
Also curious what your normal initial settings are and how u tweak it in from there...
Sorry...new toy :)
What's with the hi Z low Z settings?

ADV switch on back toggles between 24-16 Bit I believe. Someone metnioned a while back that it always does 24-bit though and will truncate to 16 bit recorders if i remember correctly. It's amazing how rapidly I forgot all this stuff once I got a new pre. The Busman UA5 is still in my arsenal though :)
Hi and Lo Z refer to the 1/4' inputs I think if I remember correctly.
I normally ran my dials around 1:30 - 2:30 at club shows FWIW
Did you get the BM2P+ mod or just a digi-mod as that makes a difference too.
-
Bm2p+ ....
What power did/do you use?
-
Lo z
You can use a 16 bit device even if it is only outputting 24
DVD battery with the tip reversed
-
adv switch on back has to be engaged if you want 96kHz...
hi z is for instruments like guitar cables...
UA-5 always sends a 24bit signal, 16bit devices will just truncate the 8bits
when red led light comes on you are -3db...
power it on, wait a sec, then hit phantom (if you need it), then turn your deck on.
hop this helps

i love my bm2p+ makes great recordings! I use the above steps per jibooer

The ua-5 is a great little box, and the busman mod sounds great IMO

Stoked to get one....what power supplies seem to work best? I've head discussion between the 9.6 and 12 volt supplies...

I ran my UA5 on a 9v DVD battery. It usually lasted about 4-5hours w/ phantom...

What he said, and I also ran mine with a 9.x RC battery but went back to the DVD batt cause it fit in the bag I was using at the time better that the RC batt did and also gave longer runtimes than the rc batt..
-
ditto on 9v dvd battery

Dvd 9 or 9.6?

Dvd 9 or 9.6?
The "DVD Battery" is/was 9v... http://tinyurl.com/mhrgl9w
The RC battery is typically 9.6v... http://tinyurl.com/mfduk48
The DVD generally was ~4800mAh (or they used to be), while the RC batteries generally run less than that (ie less run-time).

Many of us ran the UA5>JB3 combo back when... No one ever noticed that the 24bit "issue" since the JB3 (only 16/48) recorded just fine...
I think the bigger issue is: will the 24bit UA5 be compatible with 24bit recorder being used...

DVD battery with the tip reversed
I recommend installing a battery power cable to correct the polarity of the UA5, and make the connection at the battery (where pin location is standard). The reversed polarity at the UA5 can create headaches - make a cable that take care of it, and you can insert any standard power source...
There is a ton of good UA5 reading if you go back a few dozen pages: http://taperssection.com/index.php?board=4.2100

Well said Terry ;) I totally agree about the battery cable. That way he can use any battery he chooses to so he doesnt have to worry about the polarity being reversed :)

Thanks guys...I was not aware of the polarity issues...gonna hit up Ted in regards to a cable as well as reading through the older forums.

You can make your own for cheap at Rat Shack too using adaptaplugs if needed in a hurry. Ted does great work too!

Hi, does anyone know if Chris Johnson is still performing the Busman mods to the UA5? I found a 'new in box' UA5 on eBay and am gonna snatch it up. (I've always wanted one!)
Thanks, Chris.

yes he does, $160
You can prob buy a used one cheaper then what your going to pay for the mod and the unit/shipping
-
Cool, thanks! :)
I'm good with Chris' prices. He's been extremely helpful and has done some excellent work for me in the past. To me, $160 is well worth the mod.

love my bmod ua5....doesnt get much use but when it does always impressed wih the sound. need to use it more often!
-
All squared away; picked up the minty UA-5 off eBay and spoke with Chris. He's going to perform the mod for me.
Question, does anyone know if the Naztech PB15000 can power the UA-5? Or am I better off using an RB-270?
-
Both will work!! Just need the correct cable and I believe the UA5 has reverse polarity.
