Hey all,
Just wondering if anybody uses AB microphone patterns? Can you tell us the positive and negative aspects of this pattern? Is there ever a time when this is the BEST pattern to run? Any opinions would be much appreciated.

I have heard tapes with ab configs, seen them run that way, and have always hated the results. I have never run that way, and probably never will. The seperation just isn't there for me! However, YMMV.

haven't heard of that config, how does it work?

Well, the way it looks to me, you point two mics straight ahead, spread a certain distance...can';t remember the distance, but it is on the dpa page.

one of my friends ran this way at hampton '99 and i believe oswego and the results sound like crap....NO seperation, for me, at all.....it sound a little studio-esque in a BAD way though..... stay away from that...... ;)

Thanks everyone... that's pretty much what I thought, but I wanted to see if anyone has ever pulled that odd gem from this pattern. I actually heard a Dave and Tim tape (AB with 480's) that sounded excellent. Mostly the clarity sounded good though, and the separation wasn't horrible... but then again, I was listening on a Grace 901 -> HD580 headphones.... that setup could make pretty much anything sound good.

mike,
thanks for the cool info.....i just might have to try that one out this summer.....especially at moedown and all good.....my 480's might like the j-disc... ;) +T to you you mike... ;D

AB sounds OK on headphones, but sounds like sh|t on a hifi, IMO.
The reason it sounds OK on headphones is it has very little channel separation and lots of channel bleed :) That helps combat the "image on a string" inside your head feeling.
I have quite a few older tapes made with AB, sounded great and "soundboardy" when I used to listen on a $30 walkman in college. Sounds like crap now. IMO I'm with the bean: stay away.

Bean and I are going to spread the DIN word and make people stop pointing their $3k mics at the stacks ::)
I'm taping a few of the guys from hookah tonight at an acoustic show (Dave and Ed).. Let's see... I got free tiks to John Mullins 5/2... Big Wu 5/9 (not sure 'bout that one yet)... Umphree's McGee 5/16... Les Claypool 5/14 I think.
It's slowing down a bit, I kinda got used to the 6 killer shows in 8 days routine :o

DIN is one of my favorites with the mk41, have to try is also with the mk4, but I usually like ORTF with those
-
lets spread the DIN word ;D yeah, it kills me too when i see schoeps or b+k's pointing at the stacks....thats why i prefer my 481's cause i know what i'm doin w/ them ;D
