If you are using a recorder...most of the times they let you to choose between mp3 and wav (called BWF sometimes). You just have to set the recording type to WAV/BWF

I just put our band on archive.org and they only want lossless recordings. I am using a DR40 with the internal mics for the time being.

You are using the same recorder as I am. Simply, what I said, put the setting to BWF and press the record elipsoidal button. You have to press it two times. The first time just show the levels for you to set them correctly

 I understand how to press record. I didn't know if there needed to be some kind of conversion or something afterwards

After you process the recording (normalize and cut into tracks) you use xAct or Traders little helper to compress to FLac files which is lossless and upload to Archive.org

I have options for bwf 16 and 24 bit and wav 16 and 24 bit. Which should I go with?

I use 16bit, but I do all my edits in 24bit...export a 16bit file for CDwave to cut into tracks...then compress to lossless files

I don't know what this means exactly (puts bag over head)
