MBHO capsule types... any suggestions?
« on: August 02, 2004, 05:26:05 PM »
Guys,

I have a set of 603a's and the 500 hyper cardiod capsules. If i wanted to add one more set of caps, which should they be?

              Here's the line-up:

KA 100 DK -                omni
KA 100 LK -                  linear omni
KA 200 N -                  cardioid
KA 300 NB -            wide cardioid
KA 400 N -                  cardioid
KA 1000 N -                  large diaphragm cardioid
KA 1100 K -                  large diaphragm omni

Here's the MBHO link:

Thanks,

mostly i'll be taping at the shows i go to. ;)

i have plans for everything from small clubs (bluebird, ogden)

to mid sized shitty-sounding ballrooms (Cervantes)

to mid sized killer sounding clubs (Fox, Gothic)

to larger indoor places (Fillmore)

to huge indoor arenas (Pepsi Center, Richie Center)

to outdoor venues (Telluride, Red Rocks)

these are in Colorado, so not suure if you know them or not, but the point is i need something to augment the caps i have. And they may be the 500N , Now that i think about it.

Thanks again, +T for you guys...

I'd go with hypers, personally.  The wide cards should do well for good sounding and outdoor venues, the hypers better for small clubs with yappers, shitty and mediocre sounding indoor venues, and large arenas.

Hypers if you do a lot of inside taping. Cards for shed taping, and omni's for outdoors where you have no shell and flat ground behind you and you can get relatively close.

I would love to try those large diaphram omni's that MBHO maked, bet they sound nice. All I want to use is omni's outdoors now.

if you have 500's, i'd get omnis next, then cards.
i don't think i've ever heard an MBHO omni tape, though, so they may not be that great.  doesn't look like any of the other mbho users have them either.

I'd get the hypers for taping out here. Once you have the cards and hypers then you can the more specialized caps like the omni and the wide card.

Yes, what he said  ;)  I rarely ever use the omni caps because I either have to bring the two bogen mini stands or that funky, homemade t-bar just to get the desired spread. Someday I'll make that j-disc!

I love using omni's and subcards but they just are not nearly as practical as hypers and cards...

I think the reason we don't see a lot of MBHO users using the LD omin's is due to the price....way more than there other caps

Kind of confusing as to whether you have the wide card or the hypers, but I'm thinking you have the 500's (hypers).
For the venues you listed, I'd run hypers in all of them except for the big places like Pepsi Center, Red rocks, Coors amp.
The fox also being an exception....I'd use the hypers from the section there, but if you aren't scared of running at the front drink rail, cards or omni's would be sweet there (I'm guessing on the omni's as I haven't heard MBHO omnis but have heard other omnis that were sweet).

If you are just going to get one other set of caps, I'd go with the cards as I'm not sure how the omni's would sound in the Pepsi center.    Omni's or cards would be nice for Red Rocks and possibly Coors.

What kind of stuff are you taping?

yeah... it's the 500's, not the 300's. i noticed that MBHO does not advertise the 500's, wondering if they are discontinued.

I tape whatever... I've done ROckygrass, Col. Bruce (Gothic), Allmans (Red Rocks), Greyboy Allstars (Gothic), Vince Hermann and Friends (Cervantes, Trilogy, Gothic), Yo! Flaco (Soiled Dove)... have Stockholm coming up, then Grisman at the Botanic Gardens, probably Wilco in a place like the Paramount (Thomas Wolfe Aud in Asheville).

thanks for the tips...

+T to all...............

keep em coming.

i don't see myself ever setting foot into the bullshit "Coors Ampitheater" anytime soon, by the way...

i hate that place. The sound sucks, the curfew is early and the beer is expensive. Not to mention it's in Englewood....
