Oade D8 pre upgrade w/mics or AT853rx w/pantom power
« on: September 04, 2004, 06:56:49 PM »
My subject says it all.  Do I want to send my D8 to the brothers down under to modify my D8 for a
stealth rig.  Or should I purchase the At 853rx with fantom 48v power.  Would the 48V fantom power option eliminate the need for the Oade Brothers pre upgrade.   If I still get the upgrade would it improve the sound witht he 853's?  Just another stealth question that I didnt find the answer too in the archives.  Nor did I find much on the Oade Brothers upgrade with mini mics.

The Oade mic input upgrade is only good if you are to use the mic input.  With the 48v option, you will not likely use the mic in on the d8.  I would recommend the phantom power option over the d8 upgrade.  It makes your mics sound better and gives added versatility on recording decks to be used for best results.

How best to answer the question depends on how you intend to give your mics 48v phantom, should you go that direction.  With a 48v power supply only (denecke ps2, rolls 224, etc) you *may* use the mic input of the DAT deck, or you may use the line input.  If you are getting the 48v phantom from a preamp (mp2, m148, sonosax, etc) you will *not* use the mic input, making the d8 upgrade worthless.

I would personally go with the rx version of the 853s, as it gives better sound than the sound pros version, and gives all around more versatility, IMO.

Good luck, hope this info helps.

If I so chose to upgrade the D8 will the 'improved mic in' work better with the AT's during stealth operations (AT853rx>power>D8) ?   Just looking for  "good" stealth rig that I can use secreatly.  An option that the 853rx gives me over the upgrade is that when I can't use a mic stand (stealth required) these mics alow me still to use my wUA-5>D8.  However, when taping isnt permitted (booo) I cant use the wUA-5. Thats my problem!   What set up is correct for my uses?  I havent looked at the power supplies for the 853rx yet.  Is it small? I hope!   Can the Oade Brothers mini mics be used with my wUA-5 with the right connectors?

I tried this mic-in to my SBM-1 and I got a huge brickwall ... the levels were only peaking at -6dB

Tomarrow I'm going to purchase the Sound Professional Premium Audio Techanica Slimline cardioid (SP-CMC-8) with phantom adaptor and 9v power w/basrolloff and rotating clips.  Add the  two belt clips and mic bag and the bill was $444.00.  Would anyone suggest I still get the Oade mic in upgrade with this settup?  Oade cliam their upgrade works with any mics so, if it will make the mics perform at there full potental, I'll upgrade the D8.  Just this last bit of advise Please!!!

Kindly,

I think you'll be fine without it. You'll want to run line in anyway.

i'd go for the cmc-4 (at853 caps) rather than cmc-8 (at943 caps). i've got recordings with both and the cmc-4 just sound way better to my ears....and they are much cheaper.

Thanks for aving me some cash man.  I would have bought them cause it stated that they were AT 853 in compairision to performance.  I'll take your word of it though and not get the 8's.  +T

if you look at Audio Technica's spec. sheet, you won't have to take his word for it.  It'll be pretty damn clear.

kevin;

i'm not knocking the at943s as crappy mics. definitely not true, they are fine mics for their price point.  however, in COMPARISON to the at853 there's a definite difference between the 2 according to my ears.

i actually recorded a Buckethead show recently and simultaneously ran 2 (almost) identical setups:

1. at853>at8533>mv100>m1
2. at943>at8533>mv100>d100

they were on the same stand, same height and near identical config,

the at853 tape sounded much better with the fullness that i like. both were punchy as hell, great crisp highs, but the at943 did lack the power in the low end, in comparison to the at853.

This is interesting!

In light of the fact that I might work on a pair of AT943 soon I checked the AT spec sheets (links were included a few postings up)
and for the case of cardioids the most striking difference between the AT853 & the AT943 is the drooping bass response of the AT943:
From 200 Hz and downwards there is a noticeable difference in level between the two types -  if we are to believe the spec sheets.

jon;

i'm not the one to ever judge a mic by its FR curve alone, but the comparison tapes that i made described above was enough evidence for me.
the control environment was near perfect and the only difference in the recording chain are the 2 different DAT decks, which i consider negliable.

personally, i prefer the fullness of the at853 capsules, while others may prefer the brightness of the at943 capsules.

OK bring it on!  I didnt get the sp AT 853's.  The AT 943's in the long run won the race.   With batter pack bass roll off and 48V adapter kit.  Shure looking forward to plugging those into my Warm digi mod UA-5.  woohoo   Stealth rig complete when I can find a good bag or carring case for the D8.   Any advise.  Got to be stealthy

Shoot me your addy and I will send you a DVD of SHN/FLACs with the 943s if you want.  Lots of different configs.  W/ and w/o phantom.  w/ and w/o wmod UA-5.  Omni vs. Card caps.  Stealth vs open.

Thanks for the DVD offer!  Is there a great deal of soud difference in the seperate configs?  I'm only running card caps to get used to the equipment.  Then I will have my own oppinion on their performance.   Goot recordings are the only thing that will support spending $450 on a stealth rig.  Now I got to fix my car ;D
