Topic: help: Transfering files directly w/o the internet...

i downloaded a large file to my desktop at home that i want to put on my laptop. its 4 gb. too big for a cd. the only way to transfer that i can think of is via network cable. but i dont know how to do this. both machines are winxp. can anyone help me out with this?

You need a network crossover cable.

plug the cable into the network car of each machine.

setup network w/ static IP's:

machine 1
192.168.1.1
subnet mask 255.255.255.0

machine 2
192.168.1.2
subnet mask 255.255.255.0


from machine 1

start > run

\\192.168.1.2\c$

login and browse to file
drag and drop

It is not a regular network cable. It's a CROSSOVER cable. Should be labeled as such.

shit, so thats something that id have to buy if i dont have it already....

is there another method for transfering this? no dvd burner...its 1 file so cant be split for multiple cd burns

I've heard, but never tried, that there is a way to do it with a USB cable. But again, it may be something you'd have to go out and buy.

If you are handy with wires and such, you can make a crossover cable out of a regular ethernet cable. That's what I did in college when ethernet cables were handed out freely. To do this, cross solid orange with solid green and striped orange with striped green inside the cable, or do it at one of the terminations.

Note: this cable will likely be out of spec and not as fast as a real crossover cable. Hell, when I made mine, I just twisted the wires together and taped the hell out of the thing. It worked.

a short crossover should be less than $10.  If you are not in a hurry i can make one up and drop it in the mail.

in a pinch i have used the above method of cutting a normal Xover but i dropped a bead of solder on the twists.

fuck it, ill just delete teh file (its an ISO of a dvd) and download the torrent when i get home...

unless...is there a way to make an iso into a video file which is watchable (or into its original video_ts folder) and then i could just watch the dvd and delete (its not something il wanna watch more than once)

VLC (video lan client) can play VOBs directly i believe

Or ISO BUSTER will break up your ISO into the playable DVD Video files and *any* decent DVD player will play them...

If you extract to a directory (the iso that is), you can then view the resulting video files with PowerDVD or something similar.
