It has been agreed upon that while B&K/DPAs may not be as forgiving and therefore consistent as Neumann/Schoeps/AkG, when it all works out, the DPAs will usually blow just about anything out of the water.  When you say it sounds like a soundboard, its not entirely surprising.

They are expensive, but right now with the way the Euro v Dollar is, most mics have had a price increase in the States.  They are worth the price if you want to invest tho.

If you are going to buy, get the 402x series. They sound the same but are much smaller.

I dont think they sound the same as the 4011.
but thats me.

Personaly, I dont like them.  But I have doezens of amazing...astounding AUD sources from them.
funny...I still dont like them.
:)
they are dry sounding to me.  I like a sloppy wet neumann sound.

doug had a comment awhile back that he agrees the 4011 and 402x do not sound the same. I agree. I ran the 4011's and I think the bodyless have a bit more warmth and forgiveness...a bit, but enough to make a difference.

well, no doubt, the 4011/4022s rock, no matter who likes/dislikes them, they are a benchmark cardioid mic.  I still can't believe the bottom end of a 40hz 4011.  amazing

as I'm sure you know, though, the mic does pick up sounds below 40Hz, just not within their +/- 2dB spec for the mic.  and when publishing specs for the mic, they preferred to say 40Hz-20kHz +/-2dB  instead of 20Hz-20kHz +/- 8dB or whatever happens to the frequency response below 40Hz.  while the graph just stops at 40, I wonder how steeply (or not) they actually drop off.
