Topic: Burner Speeds problem

OK, so I have a Lite On 52X burner in my PC, and I cannot get it to burn faster than 16x.  Basically if I run it faster, you can hear the drive start spinning quickly, runs and then mid way through the burn, starts burning at a slower speed...and takes longer than using 16x from the beginning.

Any ideas why this is?

I am using XP Professional with 384 MB of RAM.

Any help is appreciated.

It's the buffer under run technology on that burner. It figures that is the safest speed to burn at on your machine. What processor are you running?

No offense but I think if your getting 16xburns from a 450 P3 you should be very happy.

i'm running a amd k6-2 at 500mhz and i burn flawlessly at 24x so i don't know that i would discount his ability to burn higher than that.  not sure what to suggest to you right now though, nick.
got the latest drivers for that drive loaded?

What OS Simp? And have you watched the thing through the entire burn and time it? Just curious. I have a 32x burner on a Athalon XP 1700+ with 256 DDR and while it will burn at 32x it will put the buffer under run to the test. SPeeding up slowing down and then taking about 8 min to burn a disc. So I know it's not consistently burning at 32x. I have found that 16X works prefect and there Buffer under run does not kick in at all. So normally I only burn at 16X. the burner is a lite-on and running XP home on it. Using Nero 5.

So, I've been having issues with my burner as well.  I have Sony Vaio, about 18 months old with a 24 speed burner.  About 3 months ago I started "losing" discs left and right, and the drive would only burn at about 6 x speed.  So...I went out and bought a new Sony 52 x speed burner yesterday.

Just hooked it up, and it will only burn at 5 x speed, even when specifically set to burn faster.

Anybody have this problem before? and how did you solve it.

try defrag on your HD several times.  defragmented HD will cause your burner to slow down due to burnproof.

What is DMA mode?

DMA (Direct memory access) mode is a high performance mode for transferring data to and from devices, in particular, to CD and DVD burner devices.

The burner devices can function in either DMA or PIO modes. DMA mode allows the processor to transfer large pieces of data with very little software overhead - therefore requiring low CPU utilization. In this mode, high speed burning can be performed in background with other programs running.

PIO mode requires CPU processing for every few bytes sent to the device, so that CPU utilization becomes very high when trying to burn at high speeds

only reason i suggested this is because i had the same problem when i bought a new burner a couple years ago when i was still running win2k.   it was burning way under speed, as soon as i changed it to DMA, it burnt at full speed.

I have not tried updating the drivers...I couldn't find them on the Sony website.  I guess this will be the next step.

I DID ensure the DMA was to "If Available" but still no luck.

Is it possible to have a bad IDE chord, and if so, would that cause a drive to go slow?

I had this "won't enable dma" problem on my old computer.  Easiest way for me to fix it was to a) go into control panel>system>device manager and delete the driver for the cd burner.

Then, reboot and windoze will reinstall the cd burner drivers.  Next, confirm that the cd burner is set to DMA.  If so, you're all set and things should burn right quick.

It's important that nothing else be on the ide channel for the cd burner.

Once drivers are set up, you should have no problem burning @ 52x on a p3.  I had none on my p2-400.

+T Darrin!  I uninstalled the drivers and got it working.  It's only burning at about 28x, but that's faster then it has in forever!
