48v XLR mic suggestion needed!
« on: June 11, 2010, 10:02:39 AM »
Hi all!

I´m looking for a set of mics with the following requirements:

1. miniature cards or hypers (i.e. smaller than scheops mk4)
2. runs on 48v phantom
3. terminates in XLR or TRS
4. preferably for less than $1000 for a set of two.

What are my options?

Thanks!

N

Smaller than Schoeps?  When you say that, I assume you mean smaller than the Mk4+CMC6 bodies. As mshilarious notes, just a Mk4 cap is pretty darn small.  The DPA 402x are smaller, but that's out of the price range you quoted.

Other than that, I think you already own the option that comes to mind, the Audix 1280 series.   The AKG ck9x series mics are also a little smaller than a Schoeps CMC64; much smaller if you get a custom active setup.  I like the ck93 (the hyper) pretty well.

Yes, sorry for being vague...

What I look for is 2 capsules with a capsule diameter not bigger than the capsule diameter of the mk4s...

Yes I´m looking for a capsules + cable setup!

Thanks! N

Does orientation matter?  It looks like the CMC6 + MK4 is about 116mm + 22mm long.  With a diameter of about 20mm.  Almost an inch wide (25.4mm).  And barely over 5 inches long, not including XLR connector and cable.  My STO-2's are roughly that size.  Would an avantone CK-40 qualify?  Or do you want strictly pencil like mics?  Yeah, it's bigger than 5", but only vertically.  Do temperature specs, SPL rating, yada yada yada matter?

I'd again recommend the AKG ck9x active setup if you're willing to put a little work into it (e.g., get Busman to do the active mod, if he'll do it, then get Church or somebody else to build a pre/bb to power them).  I had such a setup, and it was small and effective.  The caps are a bit longer than Mk4 but the diameter is the same or smaller, I believe.

And you can have such a setup for well under your price ceiling.

Uh . . . he wants hypers or cardioids with a capsule size less than or equal to an mk4, and you recommend the omni STO-2 and the large diaphragm stereo CK-40  ???

For reference to their form factor...  Not really as the option to satisfy.  Since size apparently matters.

MKH 8040's?  Although the budget plus a little PER MIC.

Merc KM69's, but still budget per mic.

Not really a fan of Audio Technica for outdoor use.  The manuals all pretty much say 110F and low humidity.  Which is more of a minimum rating for my region, than a maximum.  Factor in direct sunlight and heat reflecting off of a blacktop / asphalt.

Beyer Dynamic MC930.  But kind of light on the SPL for some applications.

What sort of compromises are acceptable?
