has anyone devised a external power source for the ART Phantom II yet?

Not sure, but I've gotten at least 3 or 4 shows (2 sets each) from one pair of 9v's.  That should equate to at least 9 hours of power to the microphones.  I'm sure it also depends on how much current your mics draw.

That sounds about right based on my usage as well. I just made a habit of changing the batteries after every 3 shows  or 8 hours just to be safe.

Batchain:

Have you ever checked the output on that ART box with a voltmeter? Does it really put out 48v DC?

No I haven't, but I had absolutely no trouble powering my SPC4's with it. One time I pushed the life of the batteries too far and the resulting recording's wave form at some point looked like a long slow fade out.
