Title: Shotgun

What is ideal distance for taping with short gun mics? What's to close/too far? I know there are variables here. I'm just asking in general.

I think I can answer that. I've used long and short guns. Short ones I used were Neumann KMr 81's and used them in small theaters as close as the 15th row. Sounded great. I even X/Y'ed them once, as crazy as that may seem. I like the short guns, very versitile. I wouldn't get too close with them. Hope this helps.

I've used Sennhiser ME66 short shotguns from behind the SBD and quality was very nice.  If you are DFC, then 20 rows and farther back are best.  Any closer would require Card or Omni capped mics.    If you are stuck inside 20, then position the mics towards the closest speaker stack.  Shotguns are hypers, and have a very narrow pickup.
