I ran one for a few years. I didn't think the AD2K colored the sound, that was one of the things I really liked about it. I never did any A/B comparisons between the two because the Mini-me didn't hold my interest. I do know several people who had the mini-me and today are all using something else. To me that's never a good sign. None of the people I know directly who did this had he same reason, so it wasn't just one reason that everybody had for switching.
FYI, I don't know what settings you're using on your AD2K+, but you might want to try some of the other settings if you think you're getting a colored sound.

normally I use NS2 or NS3 on the dithering setting.......The reason I was posting this question is that I had battery problems and ran my rig w/o the 2K on several occasions and those are some of my faves( very crisp recordings)....I love the 2k...But I'm trying to find alternatives to running the VX pocket...

I think it depends.... I hear more of a "digitalized" sound from the AD2K (unlike many here, though, I think this unit can make very enjoyable tapes)... if the minime is not run line in and the gain is run at high levels, people would say that the minime does increasingly color the sound. I have a few really nice shemps->V2->AD2K tapes, but also have many really nice mme tapes. I'd pick the a/d on the mme.

I use the ad2k+, and I think it is about as transparent as you can get. I can not compare it to the mme, but I also have an ad1k, and when I got the ad2k+ I was amazed at how 'colored' the Apogee sound is (at least when compared to the ad2k+). I like that sound; the ad2k+ just suits me better. What kind of power problems were you having? I ran that thing at the xmas jam, and I did swap batteries after about 6hrs, but I had tons of juice left, I just got nervous. ;)

i think the ad2k is a great box at 24 bit, but isn't as good at 16 bit
(wheras i love the v3 at 16 bit but am not as happy with it at 24 bit)

Love the AD2K+, but don't especially want to buy a VX pocket....overall, side by side the 2k seems more toughly built I think......I like the fact that you can raise the gain digitally with the mini-me during play...
The manual tells you ( the 2K) that there will be a detonation if you change the gain while operating ( they are right)The other thing I like is that the power jack on the 2k LOCKS in the power, the mini-me does not.....seems easy for mishaps

have you though about a sound devices usbpre. it costs less than any of those a/d's your talking about. you could run v2>usbpre>lappy. i would love to run a v2 in front sometime.

in regards to the ad2k, what other a/d or pre/ad puts out two different sampling rates simultaneously? thanks.

does the ad2k (or any a/d) output different sampling rates - ie 96k & 48k - simultaneously? didn't know that. I thought it only output different word lengths - ie 24 & 16-bit.
-
no, it doesn't. just 2 different word lengths
