Title: AKG 460 Mod... Anyone doing this anymore?
Post by: cashandkerouac on September 27, 2012, 12:48:10 PM
howdy all:  i know that Jim Williams is no longer performing mods for the AKG 460 bodies, and he told me in a recent email that he is not aware of anyone else doing it these days.  if anyone knows of a reliable and very competent source for the mod please let me know.  not willing to take any chances (as the stock bodies work great), so reliable references only.  thanks!

if Jim is willing to part with the mod details/schematics, my friend Greg Williamson runs an electronics company with a custom shop. drop him a line at greedtone@gmail.com.

He does very high-quality work, most recent custom was Panasonic WM61A elements in a Giant Pez with a Tube Preamp.

I could do it for you, but you would have to send them to Europe.
There's already a satisfied customer from the US, PM me for details.

Hi,

Has anyone learned what Jim's mods are to the AKG C460b mics?  I am thinking of purchasing a pair, and doing the mods myself, but I don't know what his specific changes are.

Thanks!

I've never understood the attraction of taking out the transformers that are what make c460B bodies unique. Every recording I've heard made with JW mods sound like 480s with less midrange to my ears. I asked Jim years ago about doing a mod with better transformers and he suggested Jensens might work well and he quoted $175 each, but I didn't act before he stopped doing mic mods. If I was looking for a transformerless sound with CK6x caps, I'd just get the PFA actives. good luck!

Exactly. Or just buy 480's. That said, I am also on the hunt for JW 460's for one reason only. I'm anticipating extension cables for the 460 bodies and CK6x caps and the cables can't be used with 480's.

I finally figured it out and modded myself a quad.  Check out the photos, I'm quite proud of these!  I used drastically upgraded components compared to the ones I had that Jim Williams did, but it's the same mod schematically.

You can hear them here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6emElQDVqF4

That's not me playing the guitar.  Let me know what you think of the sound!

WOW!  Nice job!  I used to own a pair of JW 460's.  How did you figure out Jim's mod? Do you have any before/after pictures?  It would be huge if we had a schematic of the mod so we can keep archived here.  Congrats man!   :clapping:
