Taping my first show- need advice
« on: April 23, 2004, 07:29:40 PM »
Hi from a newbie.
My mics are cmc 4 with a batt box with bass rolloff.  MD recorder.
How important are the windscreens on a still day?  Ill be recording a festival, mics mounted on sides of my hat.
Will I need any bass roll off recording an outdoor festival(Jazz Fest).  Volumes are mild for a concert.  Will be all types of music.
Thanks for the help and advice

very important.  use windscreens at all times- if nothing else they protect your mics from smoke or being dropped.  as per the bass rolloff depends what you are seeing- bass heavy then yes.

advice: have fun enjoy the show.  If you screw up make sure you learn something.  And yes i would run the windscreens.

always use the windscreens...use the bass rolloff, but maybe not too high, just to make sure you don't brickwall, etc...besides if you have it, why wouldn't you use it? and "mild" volume? not sure exactly how you judge volume levels but the outdoor speakers are typically stronger than indoor ones, so...

besides if you have it, why wouldn't you use it?

because sometimes you don't need it.

A better question would be, if you don't need to use it, why would you?  If you are going to brickwall, then by all means use the rolloff.  But if not, all you are doing is cutting out information before you even get a chance to listen to the recording.  You could always apply a HPF later on in post production if you feel the tape is a bit bass heavy...
