shure a81 ws attenuate too much?
« on: May 18, 2004, 03:43:03 PM »
after a two year hiatus, making the trek back to red rocks, and hitting lots of outdoor shows. wasn't real happy with the performance of my dpa screens, anyone care to comment on the fatty grey shures? Thanks, marc.

Did two shows Red Rocks last year with the Shures without any noticeable change in sound. Wasn't ridiculously windy either night but there were a few gusts...

I used them for about 4 years on both Shure sm81's and Neumann km140's.  Never noticed any attenuation other than the wind noise.

Hmm, interesting other people don't seem to notice a difference, but I feel like the Shures take out the "air" from my recordings, I guess an attenuation in the upper frequencies.  The recordings don't sound bad by any means, just don't seem to breathe as much, losing the very high end shimmer and what is otherwise the almost inaudible decay of cymbals, etc.

That said, I switched to the DPA screens to get that air back and found they don't cut it with the wind you sometimes get at Red Rocks.  I've picked up another pair of the Shures and will be running them on the rocks.
Mics: Microtech Gefell m20/m21 (nbob/pfa actives), Line Audio CM3, Church CA-11 cards
Preamp:  none <sniff>
Recorders:  Sound Devices MixPre-6, Sony PCM-M10, Zoom H4nPro

thanks all. That's what I noticed, Todd, particularly at red rocks. and i had some issues for a few sets at 10k lakes, and it wasn't *that* windy. the dpa screens are fine for indoors and minor blowing, but don't seem to cut it for gusts you can feel at all. Thanks, marc.

lets hope not, they are on their way here.  i'm not worried about loosing much using them, other than the wind.  I'd rather have little to no wind and a little loss of frequency responce, than shitty loud wind.

Rycote is the way to go if you can afford it.
