I wish I had that kind of cash to spend!!

Maybe next year around xmas they will offer the same upto 20% off they offered this year (and I also hope the Euro continues to tank and bring down the Swiss Franc a bit with it) - and you can score one of these for around $4500 or less!

This company's marketing really confuses me. Not everyone needs a million inputs and though it's clear they're targeting a higher end pro market, there's so much of a market they're passing by as well. I also don't understand pulling the old SX-R4 completely for the last two years while developing this. Finally, this is probably going to settle into the $6k or $7k range after the intro pricing is over, so why not continue production of the SX-R4, offering it at a more attractive price point? Maybe they'll eventually offer a more economical version of this with fewer inputs but as few products as they have and as slowly as they develop products, I doubt it.

I think sonosax made the right move coming out with this updated unit
This version now has a slightly better feature set than the Aeta 4minx and adds a number of new features the older version did not have
- 1 larger color touch screen display
- AES 42 support
- Real time SRC
- DANTE support (which is a newer must have feature in this space)
- 16 track recording - up from 10
I would also bet the changed they software architecture to a more modern approach with an ARM or similar based CPU running a Linux kernel controlling a DSP. This makes it very easy to add new features, such as wifi control, etc
The 4minx is designed in this fashion
Older arch (I.e. Sd 7xx series, old SX-r4, etc) use a completely DSP based solution which typical limits future expand ability

Looks nice, but so damn expensive!

How long can it go on its battery?

Unlikely - the Swiss Franc detached itself from the €uro and is about 30% stronger as a result.
So the tanking of the €uro won't affect the Swiss Franc at all.
I expect the price to rise rather than fall.
Though it is pretty cheap as it is for a Sonosax.

The Swiss Franc immediately went from an almost 1:1 with the US dollar to 1:1.2 with the US dollar last week after it the removed the Cap. Now it is 1:1.08 so it is up but not by much and about a year before they added the Cap in 2011 it was seemed to always be within 10% of the US dollar and typically less
The Euro is a completely different story

Congrats CK 8)
I figure $1k for each 2 channels of preamps, plus $1k for the recorder=$3k total. But damn, its almost double that price :P All I want is 4 channells of preamps, and a nice recorder. No need for all of that extra stuff. Obviously like comparing apples to oranges, but $5,500 for an SX-R4+ or $300 for the Tascam 70D? Hmmm lol ;) Plus I dont need the preamps in the SXR4+, just a HQ line in! And for the price, I figured that it would have a KCY Input! That would make it more attractive for me ;D
But still a beautiful deck! I wish I had the $$ to buy one for myself 8)

Looks awesome. Expensive , sure but I bet it's a rock solid all in one unit. I'll keep dreaming and who know in a year or two units might pop up in the YS. ;D

Looks awesome. Expensive
I wonder why people keep saying it's "expensive" when it's so cheap ???
I expected a Sonosax to be £10k, not under £4k as it is.
It's way cheaper than a Nagra VI, cheaper than an SD 788T and with more tracks - it's a little more than an AETA 4MinX, but in the lower part of the price bracket of the high quality machines and more tracks than any of the others.
-
I agree. It's out of the budget for a lot of TS who are coming from a hobby perspective, but from a professional perspective, compare to a SD 788t or 664 and others of that range and capability and it's surprisingly reasonable.
-
I agree that it is reasonable priced.
-
It does look a damned fine deck and fairly priced. Personally though I don't like the idea of the internal battery, and would prefer the discontinued SX-R4 with its 6/8 (??) AA batteries for power.
-
This may be cheaper than the older version because of no internal hard drive. It actually only records up to 8 tracks without the outboard 8 channel preamp unit instead of 10 on the regular R4. Also does not have the very handy level led's for each preamp or overload led for analog channels 5 and 6. I am thinking the "introductory price" is 20% less than what regular price will be, similar to the recent year end sale.

Agree--in this range (which is of course very "expensive" for a deck to be used solely by a hobbyist) it's not a bad price at all.
I am curious how the form factor and battery life compare to the 788T.
-
I am curious how much the AD8+ will cost - I am guessing around $3500
