Is a SONY DTC-A7 DAT deck a good one for doing transfers?

Send it to Paul at http://www.prodigitalinc.com/ and have him tune it up first, but yeah, that deck is perfectly fine...

A7 is ok
But
A8, A9, pcm-2600, pcm-2800, pcm-r500, pcm-r700 are all much better decks

I wouldn't bother paying the $150 (including shipping) or so to get an a7 tuned up

Thanks for the suggestions. It is just for short-term use for transfers so I am not on a search for something that will get a lot of use.

I'm scared of the estimate from Pro Digital, but it must be done.

>>> On the plus side, Plotnick is great and once he gives your deck a tune up you can have complete confidence the machine is properly calibrated and running at 100%. On the down side, with shipping and service you'll end up spending considerably more than the deck's market value. I don't know how many DATs you are looking to transfer, but have yopu considered inquiring w/ some of the guys on this forum who have working DAT decks, and currently transfer DATs? Worse case scenerio they charge you to perform your transfers - I imagine your ROI would be better than dumping $ into your own DAT deck.

I have to have confidence for the transfers and I am one of those 'needs to do it myself' when it comes to transferring a show.

I think if I add up all the $$ I saved in batteries with my Sony M10 along with not having to buy blank DATS since 2006, I should have enough to pay Paul.

Dare I ask, does he give a TS discount? I have not used his services for a long time.

No discount that I am aware of but he will occasionally trade gear for work.

His rates are posted on the web site and are only labor based - add $40 for shipping in each direction.
